Cheap Geometrical Wall Art

I’ve been working on cheap geometrical wall art pieces for a few days, and I have a lot of ideas of what to do with them, but I thought I’d start out by explaining how to make them for CHEAP with a capital C.

First, I went to the local thrift story and bought these canvases. I didn’t care what they had on them because I would be painting them black anyway. All I cared about was that they were all the same size. So, I found these four canvases (look at he pretty butterfly and flower šŸ˜‰ They cost $2.00 each (for a total of $8.00).

The first step is to paint the canvases. Black. Bye bye butterfly.

Let them dry completely before moving to the next step.

Next, carefully map out random squares on the canvases using painter’s tape (my best friend these days!)
Next, I took a stencil brush and softly and steadily moved the brush up and down, dabbing on the paint. Be careful not to put too much paint on your brush. I dabbed it in the paint, and then dabbed the paint off on newspaper before painting on the canvases. I wanted my paint to have dimension, so that’s why I used a stencil brush. That way, you can see some of the black through the colors.
When I got done with painting on the colors, I waited for it to dry, and carefully removed the tape.
Here is the first one completed.
The GREAT thing is that I used black satin paint that I already had and craft paint that I already had too. Here are all four of them

So, my grand total for these four cheap geometrical wall art pieces is $8.00. I thought they turned out sweet, and of course thrifty! šŸ™‚

  1. Brooke I must tell you I am loving your blog. I am getting many ideas and am even contemplating the kitchen remodel. These canvas things I think I might actually attempt this weekend. I have an empty wall that just needs something. Thanks. Ash

  2. so question….. in one picture there kinda dull.. in a cool way and then the last picture is really bright.. is there something you put over them to bring out the brightness or were they that color to begin with but the lightin was just different?. also… the black lines.. did you just free hand those or did you tape it off then do the black?

  3. They all turned out a little different because of the amount of paint on the brush. The lighting may have made one canvas look brighter, but really they are all very close. The black was painted first, then the painter's tape on top of the black. Then, I stenciled on the colors and took off the tape. Feel free to e-mail us at allthingsthrifty@gmail.com if you have more questions! Good luck with your future project!

  4. this post just answered my prayers for something to put on my huge, empty, showcase wall right as I walk in my front door. I am in a new house, but have NO money! THanks.
