A Change in Artwork for right around $20.00

I needed a change in my hallway, and I decided to play around with a few pictures that I had taken of my three kiddos. Photography is something I enjoy, but I wanted something different. WARNING: You will need a basic knowledge of Photoshop in order to do this tutorial.

I opened up the picture of Oaklyn, my six year old, and started playing. Here is the original. Isn’t she a beauty!?
I took the eraser, and erased the background.
Then I swapped her into gray scale.
Then I played with a “contrast” until I got the result I was seeking. I also cropped the photo.
Now they look like abstract artwork! I’m extremely pleased. I got them blown up into 16X20s at Costco for 5.99 each. I think my bill came to $19 and something cents.

The frames in this picture are from IKEA (I already had them), but they are inexpensive. I think they are 2.99 each but were wood when I bought them, I sprayed them black.
Ok, I may be biased, but I think they are all the cutest kids in the world!

UPDATE: YES ladies, the pictures are taken with a high resolution camera. The images are approx 1900X2400 pixels. But, if you want to know if your pictures are big enough to be clear, you can download them onto Costco’s photo center (make sure you press the FULL resolution button) and it will give you a resolution warning if the images are too little.

  1. did these have to be a high resolution photo in order to blow them up so large. In other words, could I do this with my basic camera? Thanks

  2. This is a fantastic idea and your children are adorable! I have a large wall that I have been debating over for some time now. I might just give this a go. Thank you for the wonderful project.

  3. I've wanted to do this for a long time and hadn't figured out how yet. Thanks for sharing! Great job and super cute kiddos!

  4. Wow…very awesome. Recently I have started taking a photo a day and playing with editing software. I hope one day I will be able to be creative enough and skilled enough to do what you do.
