Feature Friday: In Memory of my Grandpa!

My heart aches. I lost my sweet Grandpa this week. What a shock. I grew up living less than a mile away from him. I have cried more this week than I think I have in the last five years combined. He went quickly and unexpectedly.

My grandpa loved to hunt and fish and loved Fish Lake where he spent lots of time at his cabin with his dear wife. He loved his grand kids and always gave the best hugs. I worked on his farm growing up and he taught me so many lessons.  I loved how he treated me, and he always made me feel like I was his “best” worker. (I’m sure that is how all of us felt). He taught me how to change sprinklers…oh those mornings were soooo early! I worked on the farm until I graduated from High School. I remember him driving up to me in his white Ford truck with a huge smile on his face to tell me good job for having straight rows while I was cutting alfalfa with a swather. He even trusted me with his newest swather, and I was so proud that he would let me drive such an expensive piece of machinery.

When I was little, my fellow cousins and I used to search for flint out in the fields surrounding his house, but unbeknown to us, after we had gone home, he would throw all the flint back into the field for us to find the next time we came flint hunting. He didn’t want us to stop coming to hunt for it, I guess. šŸ™‚

He was an avid BYU fan and loved all sports. He especially loved basketball where he coached for 17 years.

He has a large posterity and every single direct grandchild will be at the funeral. He and his wife had 7 children, so you can imagine how many of us there will be.

  1. Brooke..there are no words for your loss. Just know..that what he taught you in life..you will pass those things on to your little ones..and the cycle will continue. My papaw passed 25 yrs ago..I was expecting my 4th..they said I couldn't travel the 6 hrs..pashaw..I did..and you couldn't of stopped me!! He was like a dad to me.I thought the hurt would never end..then slowly it does..now 25 yrs later..I still can cry over a menory..but he is still with me in my memories and in my teachings of life to my children and now my grandchildren. Hold your memories tight!!

  11. Aw, I'm so sorry. I lost my grandpa at ten years old. My gramps sounded much like yours with the hunting and fishing and the incredible love he shared with us. As I'm sure you know, you'll always miss him. But you know he would only want joy and peace for you and for you to remember how much he loved you. I'll pray that God gives you and your family comfort.

  12. Tears well up in my eyes as I read your post cause just like you my "gido" of 95 years passed away unexpectantly on March 28th (just 2 weeks ago) and my heart is breaking. Some say we should of expected it but he was healthly and held his wit right till the last few minutes in the hospital. I too have cried and just when I think there are no more tears left, it starts all over again. I have great memories of Gido, and it sounds very much like you do of your grandpa. I sure hope it gets easier. My thoughts are with you.

  13. I'm so sorry for your loss. My grandfather was an amazing inspiration in my life, and it was very difficult to lose him. Many hugs for you and your family during this time, remember they live on in us…

  14. Brooke…I'm so sorry for your loss. He's in a better place now. Hang in there and I hope you will smile and laugh about your fond memories of him soon… My condolences…
