Dining Room Table Transformation!

Have you ever worked on a project for so long that you forgot when you actually started? šŸ™‚ I’ve had this table in my garage for quite some time. She needed extra love and extra effort, but man her transformation has been FUN!

It was love at first sight! I knew when I first saw her, that she had potential. I even looked past her mismatched colors. I loved her octagon shape, and I LOVED that she came with two extend-able leaves. One of the leaves matched her and the other was black.  She was painted a dark green color, but I had something else in mind!

I started by lightly sanding the surface to even up the table top. This table had been painted multiple times and although I don’t sand furniture often, this one needed it. I didn’t sand it down to the wood, but I did sand more than usual.

Next, I primed her with KILZ. I’m sure you seasoned readers are not surprised. After the KILZ was dry, I sanded her with a high grit sand paper (250) with my electrical sander to remove the sand-paper grit that comes from KILZ at times. Using a high grit sand paper works wonders. It honestly takes the grit right off and leaves the surface oh so smooth. (I did NOT re-prime after this…it only removed the grit and the primer was still perfectly in tact.)

Then I sprayed her with Krylon Ivory. I chose a gloss sheen because I wanted her to be very durable for her new home. Gloss sheen helps to be able to wipe off the furniture in the future, so since she was a dining room table who will be wiped off A LOT in her life, I went with gloss.

Then using the tips from GLAZING 101, I glazed her. This is when my husband started to notice her. “I kind of want to keep this,” he said. “Are you sure you don’t want this in OUR house?”

I LOVE IT WHEN THAT HAPPENS!!!! And to answer his question…of COURSE I want her. In fact I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to keep a project so bad in. my. life. BUT…I am trying to keep focused on our backyard who needs our attention right now. So….she is FOR SALE. Tear.

I love her shape. I love the pedestal bottom. Here is the table without any leaves.

And with one leaf.

AND…with TWO leaves! Dimensions: 7 feet long by 3 feet 8 inches across when fully extended.

And here she is with the chairs from this week’s “WEEK of CHAIRS.”  I. Love. Them.

But, I am actually selling the set with SIX chairs…not just four!

So, e-mail me at allthingsthrifty at gmail dot com if you are interested!

Back in the SYTYCD contest, I had a project called mismatched dining room that got a lot of attention. And I have to say, I like this one better than my own! So…whoever gets this bad boy is going to love it. The pictures don’t do it justice!

UPDATE July 15, 2010: The table is no longer available.

  1. This is totally my style! I made a set with a round table top and painted unmatched wood chairs different colors with different fabric patterned seat covers too. The set was for my then college age son and so I covered the new fabric with clear plastic to make it look even more retro and help to keep the seats clean. I think your project here is TOP SHELF and you should get TOP SHELF monies for it too! Bravo for you!!! Pam @ Sallygoodin

  2. Oh man! This is exactly what I want! I think it turned out beautiful! I wish I could afford to have this baby shipped to me!

  3. I have a table that is very similar to that table, but it's still in it's wood form. I've been trying to decide what to do with it and what color to paint it and was leaning toward and Ivory color. I think you helped me make up my mind. I have 6 chairs that I need to paint as well and now I'm back to a dilemma again on them. You sure give me great ideas and inspiration.

  4. OH.MY.WORD!!! It looks AMAZING!!! I have been waiting all day long to see this transformation!! You have outdone yourself this time!! It is absolutely lovely!

    FANTASTIC JOB!!! ;D

  5. BROOKE! That is awesome! I LOVE that table! It looks so great! And my favorite chair (because you have to have a favorite:) is the orange one! Makes me want to put some orange in my house when I get home… but where? Hmmm… this will be fun!

  9. THIS TABLE AND CHAIRS ARE ABOUT THE CUTEST THINK I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!
CAN YOU GIVE ME A PRICE? I WOULD LOVE TO GIVE THIS TABLE AND CHAIRS A HOME!

  10. ACK! The fact that I put the picture of this set on my blog…indicating that the Universe should provide me with this and now there is a buyer in the comment above mine? I am seriously going to smack the "Law of Attraction Fairy".

  11. LOVE the table and the mismatched chairs. I have 6 turquoise chairs that look almost exactly like those and now I'm wishing I'd painted them different color. But NO WAY am I painting them again! ha!

  12. i truly herat the table.. i love the chairs individually.. but personally i would have loved the set of turquoise ones.. šŸ™‚ but i do want to see the table used in some home.. though.. šŸ™‚

  14. oh my gosh i love this table i want it so bad!!! i know i dont have enough money for it! you did an amazing job!!

  15. This is a beautiful makeover! I am currently wanting to makeover our kitchen table, but I'm hesitant because I want to do it right. I have read your painting and glazing 101 but I am wondering if there is something special you use on the table top so it can easily be wiped clean? And my other question is that when you sand (after priming) do you sand in all the nooks and cranny's as well or mostly just the smooth surfaces? Thanks!

  16. i LOOOVE these chairs. i am trying to convince my hubs to go with teh mismatched look, but he's not a huge fan. i'm working on it! anyway, the chairs around this table are to die for. those legs? bah! i love them! where did you find those chairs?? i know you said in another post that you found the ones around your table at a thrift store. but what about these ones??

  17. Could you tell me the colors you used for the chairs? I am re-creating this and it's my first spray painting project. I'm a little nervous and want the colors to turn out perfect, and I LOVE the colors you used! Thanks!

  18. Can I ask you a couple weird questions first, how many cans of paint and primer did you use on this?? We are in a small town in NV and the town only had 5 cans of kilz and 7 cans of ivory hoping it its enough to tackle this process on my table. It will take 3 weeks they said to have more in so I'm hoping I don't get almost done and then have to stop!! Thank you!

  19. @little miss smarty pants

Here's the thing… I have no idea how many cans I used! Some things to consider though: The size of the table and the current color etc. If I were you, I would check your stores return policy, if you can return unused product, buy it all! Hope this helps!

  20. My dining room table is my parents table and chairs and well, let's just admit, they've seen a lot better days. After 35 years and 5 table/chair abusing kids then my three moves, it's showing. The chairs are falling apart and have some extra hardware keeping them attached. Some even have cracks right down the middle of the seat. The leaves have lost some of the edges and none of them match up and leave small gaps in the table. I'm sure all the food and water we spilt as kids had nothing to do with that šŸ˜‰

I LOVE my table and not just for sentimental reasons, it really is beautiful (it actually looks almost like this table but the pedestal has two posts with a gap between them rather than the one post pedestal). My husband and I have been talking about getting rid of it because of it's poor condition. However, this has given me hope! I have been swooned by your transformation of this table and have decided to seriously convince my husband that our table NEEDS this makeover!

Thank you for the inspiration. I am both excited and extremely freaked out to do this, but I know it will look amazing!

  21. First of all, thank you so much for inspiring me!! I love your website! I have a question…i have the same chairs (the blue ones in your pic) I was wondering if you stripped them of varnish first? I have done one so far & oh-em-geee is it a pain!! I know u arent much on sanding, but what about stripping?? TIA! Amanda

    1. Nope no stripping! I just prime first with Kilz primer, sand with 220 grit sand paper and then spray paint and then glaze. šŸ™‚

  22. I have a dining room table that was recently given to us that I am looking to paint. I have been scouring your blog, learning the tricks of your trade and came across this post. Previously, you mentioned sealing a table- did you seal this with the polycyclic?…do I need to?….or does the gloss finish take care of that?

    Blessings and thanks Nicki
