Adorable throw pillows!

I have pillows like this laying around my house because my husband is SUPER picky about his pillow. So, for the last 9 years (of marriage) I have bought quite a few pillows that have been discarded almost immediately because they weren’t “comfortable” enough. I decided to use those rejected pillows as part of my change-a-roo in my spare room.

When making your own pillows, you first need to know the dimensions of the pillows you will be covering. I tend to cover my existing pillows because 1. I have A.D.D.D. (Attention Deficit Decorating Disorder) and I change my pillows a LOT, and 2. it is much cheaper than buying pillow forms. These king size pillows were 20 inches by 36 inches. If you refer back to my “How to make pillows 101 post” you will find that you need to cut your fabric 1 inch bigger on each side before you sew the fabric. So, for the king size pillow cases, I cut the fabric 37 inches by 21 inches.

I use an olfa cutter to cut my fabric because it is much easier to get a precisely straight line this way.

Now, I know you will start wondering where I got this fabric, and you might be surprised when I tell you it is actually a TABLECLOTH from Target. I instantly fell in love, and the largest size (104″x60″) only cost $21.99. I loved the large pattern on the fabric and most the time this type of fabric costs at least $20.00 a yard. So, I figured I’d go for it. (They have a lot of other patterns I liked too…go check them out HERE). It is hard to find a fabric with a large pattern. (At least it is hard to find around here.) So, when I found this tablecloth fabric, I was really excited.

I decided to make a few smaller pillows also. Because of my decorating addiction preferences, I tend to keep my bedding white so that I can change the colors of my rooms quickly and easily. Of course I don’t have white bedding in my kids’ rooms, that would be ridiculous. They would turn the bedding brown in 1.2 seconds. But, I do have white bedding in my master bedroom and my spare bedroom.

I used my mad sewing skills (sense the sarcasm)…I’d rate myself a 4 out of 10. I can sew a straight line and struggle a bit. But, sewing a pillow cover is definitely EASY as pie. I promise.

 Check out the end result.

I think it looks like I spent more than $20.00 on those pillows, don’t you?

Oh and the best part? I still have some fabric left!

I know some of you new readers may have missed the post about my window valance in this room, so to answer your future questions, I’ll hurry and tell you. šŸ™‚ I bought a table runner on clearance at pottery barn a few years back for $7.00 and made it into a window valance. I bought an extra runner to stick at the bottom of my bed. Fun huh!

Thanks to you I also have a garage full of yard sale and craigslist treasures that I hope to upgrade in the near future. Keep the great ideas coming. p.s – I think I saw that table cloth for sale at my TARGET. $4.99! I must head back there now.

  4. OK so this cracks me up because months ago I bought the same tablecloth from Target and did the same thing- made throw pillows from it! I actually got sick of them-and they are hiding in the closet- but yours look fab!! šŸ™‚ The room is beautiful šŸ™‚ Now I'm always looking for tablecloths, placemats, and napkins- to use the fabric!

  5. I am so glad I found this post, a while back i bought a quilt from Target on clearance (discontinued) but the shams were long gone to match but they still have the same pattern in a 84 x104 tablecloth in store as of today- going to buy it this weekend and make me some pillows to match my quilt!!
