One Year of Home Ownership!

We had a friend tell us that when you own a home, the projects never end. That every weekend we would have “something” to work on. He was right!

Last week marked our one year anniversary of being home owners. I can’t believe it has already been a year…it has flown by! I thought it would be fun to feature the before and after photos of what has taken place over the last year. It has been a process, and it has been a challenge. One of the biggest struggles we have had is making a new home feel “OURS.”

So, for the next couple of days, I’ll show you just how we have made our home feel homey! I remember feeling completely overwhelmed. Feeling the “where do I even begin” syndrome! I’m sure many of you can relate.

Beware that my “before” pictures came from our Realtor and the quality is not great.

Let us begin with the curb appeal (or lack thereof). šŸ™‚ When be bought the home, it was a bank owned property. The front lawn was dead, and a lot of plants were also.

I can’t take any credit for this transformation. My husband is obsessed with yard work, and I am sooo grateful! I seem to kill any plant that I am in charge of so luckily I have Dan to take care of the yard. We laid new sod and planted new plants, and it looks a ton better!

Next is the downstairs family room. I think one of the main challenges I had is that I had such a “blank slate” to begin with. Don’t get me wrong, it was also a good thing, but at times it was hard to decide what to do.

Voila! it has been transformed into our space. I loved transforming a hutch into our television stand, and the stencil was a lot of fun too!

Next is our dining room space.

One of the things I loved about this house was all of the window seats throughout the entire house. I will be making seats for those eventually, but this is what we have done so far! I loved transforming my double wing back chair, and the mismatched chairs around the table were also a lot of fun!

I’ll continue to show you the transformation soon!

  1. love it! your hubby did a great job outside too! My hubby… not so much into yardwork, or housework for that matter. We have been homeowners for 2 1/2 yrs and were still working hard almost every weekend, it never ends! In fact were just putting the finishing touches on painting the outside of our house, come check out the post tomorrow!

  2. I love everything you've done so far! Can Dan come do our back yard??????? We've just hit our year mark here and the projects keep coming…

PS. Congrats on being a top decorating blog! You deserve it!

  3. Yeah! I'm excited for the recap. I'm always looking for a little extra inspiration to keep me going!

  4. We have been in our new home for nearly a year and my handywork and progress pales in comparison to what you've done! I love your blog, and even linked back to it in a recent post. Finally, someone who loves colour like I do! Yay!

  5. great job!!! We've owned our house for two years as of this December but only actually lived in it for a few months. =( Our projects will commence when we return to our beloved home in just a few more months! =D

  6. Wow what a nice difference some plants and greenery make to the front. And I do love the seating area sooo much šŸ™‚ We have only been in our house for 2 months, although it seems like much longer. We also bought a bank owned property & we have SO much to do. I cannot wait to look back a year from now to see the progress šŸ™‚

  7. Hi! I'm a new follower! I can relate to this post. My husband and I closed escrow on our first home 1 week before our wedding! It was bank-owned and very dull looking.

We're going on 10 months of homeownership! šŸ™‚ Every weekend I'm doing something new- and I love it! This is a big change for me since I'm used to living in apartments where you can't paint or update anything!

I think your dining room is stunning! I love the energy and colors you mixed together. It's very fun and cheerful. The front looks gorgeous!

  8. WOW — I'm totally digging your blog and your style. WIll be turning to you for some inspiration!!
