A hounds tooth book shelf for you!

Back in May, I acquired this shelf on Craigslist. Yep..MAY!! I know I have been talking about cleaning out my garage for our upcoming Halloween party, and this shelf has been half done for five months, I almost ditched the project out of laziness. How embarrassing! I found out I was pregnant in May, so maybe that can be my excuse?!? I kept running out of spray paint, and that is the WORST!
I get this question a lot, “Can you paint furniture that is not wood?” My answer to this question is a resounding OF COURSE YOU CAN!!! However, painting furniture made out of particle board may be harder to get a smooth surface because a sander may not do the trick. But, you can prime and paint this furniture the same as you would wood furniture.
Anyway, it was in worse shape than I thought, so it needed extra loving care and attention. I needed to fill several large dings and scratches with wood puddy prior to painting. Here she is before:

And here she is after a bit of love, Krylon Ivory gloss spray paint, and a new hounds tooth backer board. The doors were un-salvageable. They were broken badly, and the hubby and I tried our darndest to fix them. No such luck on this one.

The good and bad news? The good news is that it is going to look GREAT in someone’s home. The bad news? It is already sold. šŸ™

  1. Looks absolutely beautiful!! I would love something like that in my house.

And btw, you still accomplish WAY more than most of us normal people, who don't already have 3 kids and a pregnancy to deal with. You go, girl!!

  2. That is gorgeous! I love the houndstooth. I'm always so amazed at how you transform furniture.

  8. Hi – I have 2 crummy looking faux wood bookcases. I'd love to paint them because they are huge and hold many books. I want to make sure I get this right – I can prime them and paint them? I was going to spray paint them but I can be more color options with regular paint. I love love love the transformation of the bookcase. VERY inspiring.

  9. I'm always curious to know how much you sell your finished projects for? Do you sell them for lots or just what you have into it?

  10. Oh now this is a.m.a.z.i.n.g.!! I'm kicking myself for just selling a "not wood" entertainment center in our last yard sale for I'll not talk about how much. This is just toooo cute!! Love it.
