DIY Unique Turquoise Mirror

Sometimes I get crazy ideas, let’s be honest. My husband is a good sport, and he goes along with my “vision” most of the time!

I decided I wanted an ultra-unique mirror. The idea has been processing in my brain for several months. Then, I got contacted by a super duper nice producer from Good Things Utah. It was a perfect time to materialize my idea because of course I wanted something fun to take to the show!

Step 1: I made a design on Photoshop…

…and used an overhead projector to transfer the image onto a piece of MDF.

Next, the hubsters cut it out for me with his jigsaw. (Note this picture is from another project…since I didn’t capture the actual event this time.)

As the MDF began to take shape, I got REALLY excited. It was turning out even COOLER than I thought it would.

I purposely chose 1/2 inch MDF to add dimension to the project.

I primed the bad boy with KILZ.

I was careful to make sure that every edge was covered with primer. I used a brush to get into all the nooks and crannies of the design.

Then, I painted the mirror turquoise to match my home decor.

I used Krylon Blue Ocean Breeze.

Next, I glazed the edges of the project using my dry brush technique I demonstrated in my glazing instructional video.

Then, my cute hubby ordered me a piece of glass from the nice folks at Jones Paint and Glass.

AND Voila….my unique turquoise mirror was complete!

Now to decide where to hang this bad boy!!! The pictures don’t do this justice! I hate it when that happens!

Tutorials for the other projects shown on the Good Things Utah segment will be appearing soon. Stay tuned.

  1. What a cool idea! But, I think the best part of this is the final picture. I like that I can see your husband (? assuming that's him on the couch) holding your little one!

  2. LOve this. I saw almost this EXACT thing at HOME GOODS but it was way way too much money-although I walked around w/ it in my cart and almost bought it. But I knew there had to be a way to make something like it! Love what you did šŸ™‚ Can I buy one from you? šŸ™‚

  3. Okay, I'm a total DIY newbie…I'm doing my first project and I'm wondering how you get the spray paint not to run? Also, is there a specific color of "glaze" and where do you purchase it?

  4. Just found your blog – love DIY projects! I was actually thinking of doing this same technique to make a side table. You have inspired me! I might have to try that glaze though – what a great idea.

  5. I'd love to try this, but I have the same question as several others. How did you attach the mirror to the MDF? And how did you hang it?

  6. Dawn,
We bought mirror clips from the hardware store and used those to attach it to the MDF. šŸ™‚ To hand the bad boy, we bought D-ring hooks to attach the back of the MDF, then we put anchors in the dry wall to secure it well enough to hold the weight. Good luck on your project!
