ScotchBlue Painting Party

Hi All Things Thrifty Readers! Remember when I told you we had been painting this weekend? Well, the project is done, and I am excited to be part of the ScotchBlue™ Painting Party.  This means that I am among a group of DIY bloggers who have gathered to inspire you to PAINT SOMETHING!! 🙂

Here is the list of bloggers who are involved in the Painting Party today. You should check out the other bloggers’ projects because they are all amazing, and I guarantee they painted something FAN-TABULOUS.

  2. Chrissie @ Chrissie’s Collections
  3. Shelley @ The House of Smiths

The project that we completed for the painting party has been on our to do list for awhile now. When we moved into our home over two years ago, it had virtually no character. It had been a spec home. The walls were tan. The carpet is tan. The ceiling is tan. EVERYTHING was tan. So, we have been consistently adding color since the day we moved in, and you know I am NOT afraid of color! 🙂

Well, the vaulted ceiling is one of my favorite parts of our home, and above the wall is a large plant shelf. The top of our walls had a few small decorative drywall steps along the edge. (Is that even what they are called?)

The wall started out looking like this. BORING.

The drywall steps are SCREAMING for some love. Don’t ya think!?!?

The steps were kind of annoying from a design perspective. I liked them at first, but I was unsure of what to do with them. So, for two years I stared at them. We finally decided to go to Home Depot and bring home a bunch of different molding pieces to see if the molding would look silly if we installed small pieces of crown molding. We decided that if we layered two small crown pieces on each part of the drywall steps it looked pretty darn good. It would look like one large piece of molding which I was pretty excited about. In fact, it adds a ton of character to the space. So, we got busy.

When I say WE, I mean Awesomeness (my hubby). I hardly helped at all. Well, if you count saving the children from dying by watching them and keeping them from climbing off the ladder, then I guess I did a darn good job at helping.

The hubsters installed the crown molding by cutting the wood with his miter saw. He is an excellent finish carpenter. I am super lucky to have a hubby who tolerates sees my vision. We puttied the nail holes with wood putty and waited a day for it to dry completely. Then we sanded it so that it was smooth. Then, Dan taped of the molding with Scotch Blue Painter’s Tape.

We made sure that the tape was precisely along the edge of the molding and that the edge was pressed firmly against the wall to prevent bleeding.

Then my painting crew (ahem….the hubsters…yes this was a one man show) painted the the molding. He painted two coats to make sure it was completely covered.  The ladder is really big, and I was sitting on the couch observing protecting the kids. 😉

So all in all, the project (in my professional opinion) was a huge success. I love it. It looks like a huge chunky piece of crown molding.

The scotch blue tape worked wonders, as usual.

  1. Talk about color! I love it!!! And as a fellow owner of a spec "beige monster" I am totally with you on adding color anywhere you can. Great project!

  2. I would use the Scotch Blue to keep ceiling paint off the crown molding. I know we should have painted the ceiling first, but I couldn't decide and needed the walls painted to help me decide. Now I am on to the ceiling.

  3. I would use it to help paint the whole house we just bought! We have to repaint the trim this weekend, it's painted FLAT builders beige at the moment, yuck!

  4. The molding looks fantastic! Right now I have a teenager who would like stripes painted in his new room. The Scotch locktite blue tape would make my job so MUCH easier!

  5. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I have never gotten the blue tape to work well. I finally quit using it because of the false sense of a nice line I got – only to be disappointed when I peeled it away.

  6. Your trim is awesome painted! I just bought a fortune worth of paint and will be painting the rest of my life, or until I get my upstairs painted, whichever comes first. I would love to win some of this awesome tape. Love your blog!

  7. Love, love the molding and the beautiful design on your kitchen wall!! You are always so inspiring to me!! I would use the Scotch Painter's tape to tape off the room that's being converted into my office!

  8. How much does he charge an hour for the job? I have a whole room that needs doing…

The crown moulding made a real difference and looks as if it's always been there.

I've got my free painters tape and this is exactly the kind of project I need it for. It's a big help seeing it here in action.

  9. The moulding is beautiful and your kitchen is gorgeous! And those blue chairs & table are to dies for.

My bedroom is desperate for a new paint job – I want to do a big, chunky chevron pattern as an accent wall. 🙂

  10. I would love to have that tape to help me make me a geometric headboard. I have been married 11 years and still don't have a headboard!

  11. Hi Brooke. Trim makes such a huge difference. You did a great job protecting the little ones (assuming they're still alive) and hubs did a beautiful job with the molding.

We still have several rooms to paint and more molding to add. I really need that tape!

    Hugs…Tracy 🙂

  12. I would use an entire roll (or more) of the new Scotch Blue tape painting my brand new chunky base molding that I am in LUV with. Thank you for a great giveaway and great job on the molding beef up!

  13. I would LOVE to win some of that painter's tape. I want to do a striped wall in my game room and i've read that striping textured walls is a pain – tape that sticks well would hopefully prevent any leakage. 🙂

  14. It turned out Awesome! Love the contrast it makes the accent drywall pop. I would use ScotchBlue Painters Tape with EdgeLock to paint my kids room. Stripes would be great in there.
