How to spray paint furniture {YELLOW}

how to spray paint furniture It’s not a secret that painting furniture is the norm around here, and Krylon is my favorite spray paint, and believe me I’ve used a lot of brands. The nozzle is by far the best one out there. If you haven’t used Krylon… just try it. krylon{They don’t pay me to say that either…all opinions are 100% mine}.   Krylon paint comes out in a flat spray pattern {instead of round} and it makes the finish look professional. I have lots of painting tutorials, but I’ll give you a refresher course and a few tips and tricks a little later.
Painting furniture is a great option for anyone, but you should to do it right or your paint will chip off easily. You don’t want to spend valuable time and money on a project that won’t last. Don’t worry I have painted hundreds of furniture pieces and have made every mistake in the book. I will help you make the right choices.
For renters, painting your furniture is an easy way to add pizzazz to your room. It adds an instant POP of color. Believe me, I rented for years. I know how you feel if you are in that category. My friend Suz rents and is surrounded with white walls that are off limits to paint. Soooo, naturally she chose to add a pop of color through painting furniture. She got the hutch at an online yard sale for $100, and although the hutch was already in pristine shape, Suz wanted something unique and different.

Step 1: Clean your furniture FIRST!
We started this project by wiping off all the dust and grime. We were careful to wash it carefully so that the surface was clean.

Then I used the techniques that I’ve explained in previous posts {click on the images below}.

Step 2: PRIME ALWAYS PRIME
In a nutshell, I always prime first, and I use KILZ original primer.

Step 3: :Let it dry and SAND with 220 grit sand paper.

After the primer dries completely, sand off the gritty texture with 220 grit sand paper. This is a VERY important step especially if you are going to glaze your furniture. You will have a hard time getting the glaze off if you don’t sand the grittiness off first.

Random side note: I know someone will ask, so let me answer the question, “How many cans of primer and paint do you need?”  For a big project like this hutch, we used 9 cans of primer and 19 cans of paint {which would have totaled about $100 in paint} Thank you to KRYLON for donating 15 cans of Bauhaus Gold for this project!

Step 4: Paint with slow and even coats.

After you have sanded the grittiness off, wipe off the dust and start painting slow and even coats of Krylon paint {this mustard yellow color is called Bauhaus Gold. I always start spraying off the furniture and end off the furniture before I move down to the next section. If you go to my post specifically about painting furniture, you will see a video demonstrating proper spray painting techniques.

Step 5: Glaze your furniture to accentuate the nooks and crannies. For detailed instructions on how to glaze furniture, check out my glazing 101 and glazing FAQ pages.

I am thrilled with the result. Suz did an amazing job.yellow hutch refinished yellow furniture 1   yellow furniture1
I love how detailed and meticulous she was in the painting process. It helps to be picky because then it will look like you BOUGHT it like that, and her hutch definitely looks great.
If you have painted some furniture, I would love to see it! Send it to allthingsthrifty at gmail dot com.
Although this is not a sponsored post, Krylon donated spray paint for this project. I did not receive any compensation and all opinions are 100% my own.

  1. Great job, looks good, like the fact that you reused the original hardware. Thanks for including the number of cans of primer and paint you used. Good to have idea of quantity need for that size of a project. Had a friend call me this morning to see if I wanted to buy a hutch she has that I like, well had to say no cause I already have 4, one to refinish. After I refinish one I will think about the others, LOL.

  2. Beautiful. It really makes a different when you do it right.

I like that you prefer a sealer like Polycrylic rather than wax. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems to me that wax is going to be a problem down the line if someone wants to change to a different paint color. Wax is going to resist any water based paints, right? Wouldn't it have to be stripped off or would just a primer be bonding enough?

  3. I love the transformation. It looked so heavy and dated before and the after version with the beautiful color instantly converted it to a modern masterpiece. Amazing what paint can do. Great work!

  4. WOW! What a gorgeous color. Great work on the revamp! I love how reading blogs and hanging around on Pinterest has encouraged me more and more to see things as what they *could* be, and not just as they *are*. I love making something my own. No one else has a piece exactly like that hutch!

  5. Just tried spraying primer for the first time…wow, I’m a believer now. Thanks for the great tip on the Kilz primer.
It worked well and was so fast. For those curious no drips at all if you stand 10-12 ” away.
Will sand and paint. So great, cute little dresser for $60 for my beach place.

  6. Love the re-newed yellow furniture – Suz did a great job.

I have a question, could you find out what paint color is the wall behind the yellow hutch? I have a large piece of yellow furniture and I’ve been sampling paint colors. I love her color choice! Please let me know. Thanks!

  7. Does the Krylon Paint & Primer in one or Dual (i think) work as well as the separate prime then paint process? Thanks!
