What Protective Topcoat Product should you use on Chalk Paint that isn’t WAX!?!

Hi guys! One thing I hope you know by now is that I try hard to be upfront and honest around these parts. When I like something I tell you, and when I don’t like something I tell you too. I tested Rustoleum’s Chalked paint a few months ago, and told you all about it. I wasn’t paid to do so, either. {Well, unless you buy products from my links, then I do earn a small referral commission, just keeping’ it real}.

My main beef with Chalk Paint in general before I reviewed chalked paint, was the wax. I’m not a fan. I don’t like how it feels. I don’t like that a high traffic piece of furniture needs to be re-waxed in a few months. It’s just not my fave. So, when I decided to try the protective topcoat product from Rustoleum, , a little voice in my head said, “This could be the product that replaces wax forever.” But I needed to try it myself enough to know if it would work well.

I hope you know that I try to save my readers heartache, project disasters, and time. After all, I’ve gone through my fair share of all of the above. For the last several months after using the new protective topcoat product Chalk Paint instead of wax, I have to say I’m in absolutely 100% in love. I  have not had to reapply the product once! AND it’s not extra glossy and it’s not yellowy! I do not know if it yellows over an extended amount of time, but after 6 months it has not yellowed.

I used the product on this armoire, and I love how great it turned out! Country Grey Furniture
In fact, here are a list of all of the supplies I used in case you are curious {again, I will earn a small commission if you buy something}

Chalk Paint Brush
Chalked Paint Country Gray
Chalked Protective Top Coat
Purdy Brush
3M Super Fine Sanding Pads
Lint Free Cloths
I used the same refinishing process for this armoire as I did in this video below:

I don’t have a before picture of this armoire, but this is part of the set that is in the video above, so it was that same honey oak color, and the after pictures don’t do it justice!

Distressed and Antiqued Furniture tutorial

The Chalked Paint from Rustoleum is definitely a great product, but it only comes in a few colors, so if you want a great product that can mix into any flat paint and make chalk paint, try BB Frosch Chalk paint powder.  I LOVE that stuff.

How to Paint and Distress furniture with Chalk PaintI’m excited to say that the protective topcoat product is awesome. It dries quickly too. I’m not a huge fan of wax. I know the typical chalk paint finishing step is to wax the furniture when you are done, but I like Rustoleum’s Matte Topcoat product better than wax. It has held up past the lifespan of wax on high traffic pieces!

They sell it in stores at Home Depot now too! Or if you are like me and are an online addicted shopper, you can order it online HERE.

I have to admit, I painted this furniture for my neighbor, and when I gave them back, I was super sad. #DIYproblems

Hope you had a great weekend!

      1. I love love like be the Matte Clear! I use an auto detailing sponge to apply or you can use a piece of leftover upholstery foam.

        1. I have used Rustoleum Chalk paint and their Matt Top Coat. I luv the Chalk paint……..however when I use the topcoat on lighter colors, such as white ,a lite grey & a soft pink it Yellowed ! No matter how lightly I put it on . I won’t use it again on those or a white. I did use the Rustoleum Matt Spray on a chalk white side table base and that did Not yellow.

          1. I read ablout this before I decided on the rustolium chalk paint sealer. If you have woods that have high tannins the poly will pull the tanin from the wood through the porus chalk paint and bleed through lighter white paints causing the yellowing. You can prevent this by using a primer first on high tanin woods. Also I read a comment from someone who just repainted chalk paint over the bleed through after the sealant and then sealed again with no problems.

          2. I used this sealer on top of my newly painted chest of drawers that I painted with chalk paint it just ruined it it is a teal color and it turned the chest of drawers yellow and I did not put it on thick I will never use this stuff ever again and it is very expensive I will go back to the wax I don’t even know how to get this stuff off of here now to get my chest of drawers back like my newly painted one looked

  1. I realize this is a post about Rustoleum, but I thought you might like another tool in your toolbox. You do such beautiful work, I figured this might offer an alternative as well.

Everyone’s trying for that perfect matte finish. But pretty much everything is satin finish you have to rough up. I have figured out the perfect topcoat for a matte finish, and something that has raw wood looking completely raw, and all that chippy paint? You can top that with my brilliant idea and it doesn’t make the chips look gummy like a -urathane product does. You can’t pick ’em off, but you can’t see what’s holding the chips on.

Ready? What is this miracle, you ask?
Exterior, latex, flat, DARK, paint base. Just the base. Without any pigments added to it. (BM is a 4 or 5). It goes on horrifyingly white, but dries so invisibly that you need to mark where you left off if you don’t finish. It seals, has UV and water protection in it, and it’s made to be durable! No water rings from glasses, no rewaxing, no shine when you go to all the trouble to paint with chalk paint to GET a matte, chalky finish!

It also won’t yellow like products that end in -thane. Ever.

Now, I’m going to the store tomorrow and am going to check out Rustoleum. Next time you’re at the store, pick up a small can of paint base. You won’t believe how well it works.

Thanks for another tool in MY toolbox!

    1. I am excited to try that! I used chalk paint on our main table we eat at and have 5 kids! I heard the wax would protect it but it does NOT! Now I have peeling paint and water rings! So…can I still use this product even though there is wax on the table?

      1. Hi,

I chalk painted our mantle with rustoleum country grey over a homemade brown stain, I wanted protection and to not use wax I found a product mentioned on Pinterest called Polyvine wax finish varnish, clear satin finish. Totally protects, totally gorgeous. Ordered online!

      2. Hi Jennifer, Did you paint your table with the Rustoleum Top Coat? How did you remove the wax that you already had put on it? How has it held up so far? Thanks, Bennie

    2. Christine, what brand of “exterior, latex, flat, dark paint base.”? And what does “BM” and “in a 4 or 5” mean?

      1. I would be interested in knowing the answer to Chris’ questions as well. does the brand matter and what does MB in a 4 or 5 mean?

          1. Do you think its safe to use exterior paint on indoor furniture, where we live breathe and eat?

    3. Hi!

Does it darken the color of the chalk paint? My big concern is changing the color. I love the color I have now and do not want it to be darker.

    4. Would this base coat work as a top coat for white chalk paint? Everything is turning my project yellow and I’m tearing my hair out trying to figure out what to use to protect the paint. Thanks!

    5. Christine, if I am sealing a pure white piece, I would use a clear not dark exterior flat latex base, correct?

    6. I’ve been using the Rustoleum Matte Clear for awhile now. Love it! So much easier and faster than wax!

    7. This is the first i have heard of this! Makes complete sense and exterior paint!! And it doesn’t yellow even on bright white?

  2. Does this product work on regular paint or stain? I’m looking for a protective coat on a grey-ish stained table. I’ve tried a couple different ones but each pulls out the yellow in the wood. And I love the matte finish. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

    1. Hi Natalie,
i was wondering if you tried the Top Coat on the stain. I was wondering about doing the same…
      Thanks.

  3. The armoire looks amazing! I have a similar piece I’ve been pondering for a while. Seeing yours makes me want to try it! Thanks for the tips. BTW I’m an online shopper addict as well 🙂

  4. Hi Brooke,

I have a question…or two! What do you do if you want to use another color to distress the piece? For instance, paint with chalk paint, distress it, use clear wax to seal it and I often wax my piece with either brown or white wax…depending on the color of paint I have used. How would you do that if you don’t use wax? I’ve considered glaze, but have yet to try it…any thoughts?

    Thanks so much.

    z.

    1. You can still use wax if you want to use it for color distressing! You can just use this afterwards. I’m just not a fan of wax for durability purposes. BUT, with that being said you can use glaze. BUT, you can’t use glaze with chalk paint. Glaze would suck right into chalk paint. It needs to be put over a glossy paint not a flat paint.

You can look at my Glazing tutorials by searching glazing 101. But flat paint does not work with glaze.

      1. Just an FYI- I used glaze over chalk paint – all I did was put a coat of polyurethane first and then the glaze and then another coat of polyurethane. It turned out beautifully and as it’s my living room coffee table, I am hoping it’s more durable than wax and so far so good.

    2. You can use your topcoat, and then glaze. Sealing the chalk paint first, keeps it from absorbing too much of the glaze.

  5. Great work, looks awesome!!! Unfortunately I don’t have quite the success story that you’ve had 🙁 I was working with the Chalked Ultra Matte Linen White and used the recommended Chalked Protective Topcoat and it yellowed almost immediately. So sad and so many hours lost. I read through a million blogs and pinterest posts and have tried so many different topcoat products. I’ve made the mistake of using polyurethane and it yellowed….lesson learned! I’ve used Polycrylic (which promises no yellowing!!), sadly this was not the case. I’ve also tried a variety of topcoat sprays to no avail.

Essentially, I’ve been practicing my white chalk paint application technique on furniture in order to get good enough to do a wood mantle fireplace but at this point I feel forced to try a different route and stay very far away from white chalk paint because a wax finish won’t fly for this project and I can’t find a topcoat that won’t yellow.

Any suggestions? Help! SOS! lol. ok, rant finished! Also, let me know and we can steal that cabinet back from your neighbour!!! j/k

    1. I just had this happen to me. The matte clear turned my white painted piece yellow. Now going through posts to find a solution. Did you find one?

      1. I know these are old posts, but did anyone figure out what to do with the yellowing? I used Chalked matte clear on top of Chalked gray color and now my piece is yellow. Do I have to sand it all the way down and start over or can I paint over it?

        1. I find if you dont prime first no matter if you are using a dark colour the tannin of wood will come through. I used rustoleum serenity blue without priming and after using the matte topcoat the tannin came through. I just did a light sand 2 more coats of chalk and matte topcoat again and came out beautiful. I now will always prime first when using the topcoat. Hope that helps x

          1. Wow, not true at all. I tried Minwax polycrylic and it yellowed one leg before I saw and quickly wiped it all off! Had to use wax ?

    2. I use a Top coat by COUNTRY CHIC called “Tough Coat” and it too will yellow a bit with the white paints. So I have learned to put a tad bit of paint in with the top coat to maintain the desired color. Might want to try that.
I have yet to find a perfect TOP COAT that I LOVE TO WORK WITH . Still on the hunt.

    3. What kind of wood did you paint that yellowed? There’s a good chance the poly didn’t yellow the paint just pulled the tannins through the chalk paint. I’ve had that happen many times and coatings the piece with a good shellac prior to chalk painting that solves all your problems with yellowing paint

    4. Some personal experience…. I chalk painted a counter top – and an L shaped workbench for my craft room. the counter top is being used as a mini coffee bar for the moment. it is chalk painted in french linen and dry brushed in satin white (left over) paint. I used 3 coats of minx flat water based polycrylic. no yellowing, but it’s not super flat, and it did darken the chalk paint some.
for the workbench I wanted a durable finish – so, over french linen chalk paint-rubbed out to expose some bare wood I tried General Finishes High Performance flat sealer. (used for painted flooring) Nice flat finish – it did Not darken the chalk paint, and seems to have a very durable finish.
I’m really liking the ease of application of the GF sealer, and the results. They also make a flatt-out-flat top coat -not as HD as the high performance sealer, but have not used it yet.
I also do not care for the wax durability, but still want the flat finish.
I hope this gives you some options. Happy painting.

    5. General finishes makes a water based poly called High Performance. I use it. Doesn’t yellow. Can buy at a Woocraft store or on line

    6. It could possibly be the wood you chalk painted. The tannins in the wood seep through chalk paint because it’s so dry and matte and no matter how many coats of paint you put on the tannins colot may come through. Sometimes even though chalk paint says no primer needed you may need to use a shellac to seal wood especially if it has knots in it or a dark wood, than you can paint on top and no color will seep through at all. I all wondering if that is what is happening in your case because I have used polycrilic on white chalk paint and never any yellowing but I always prime with shellac or good stain blocker.

    7. Jeanette, do a sandwich finish on light colors……………do your last finish coat, then poly, the apply one last final coat of paint. You get the poly protection but also get a final top finish without the yellowing.

    8. yes I have ran into the same thing I have ruined a couple chest of drawers with this top coat that is supposed to be made for chalk paint it turns everything yellow it doesn’t matter how thin you put it on it’s ruined my furniture and I don’t know how to get it off of there without having to repaint the whole dresser again I am so disappointed in this stuff

  6. Hi I have a question for you. I used bb frosche chalk paint and did their wax over it but it is a high traffic piece and I want to try what you suggested. Do I need to take the wax completely off my piece first? Thanks!

  7. I am thinking of painting my kitchen cabinets with chalk paint. I am hesitant about how they will hold up. I am wondering if you have any insight or if this product may be a good solution to more durability over the chalk paint?

    1. Dont use chalk paint on your kitchen cabinates without sealing your cabinates first then after painting seal with a non yellowing polyacrilic .

  8. Hi,

Great pieces and beautiful work. Thanks for sharing. I am wondering if you have tried the Rustoleum Chalked matte sealer with other brands of chalk paint or only with the Rustoleum? I am a huge fan of the Annie Sloan paints, but not of waxing and am wanting to try alternatives to waxing.

    Thanks!

    1. I have tried it with BBFrosch Chalk Paint, but not yet with Annie Sloan. I would imagine it would work great!

  9. I love your ideas a lot, I have an original Bassett dining room set, table with several leaves, (8) chairs a hutch and a credenza, same color as your armoire, and bedroom set you just showed us, never done anything like this before, I’ll appreciate your help on sharing what you think I should do with it, I don’t want to mess these pieces up, thank you in advance…

  10. I am in the finishing stages of redoing a buffet. I’ve used 2 coats of Zinnser primer, and two coats of Rustoleum Chalked in a light color. I’ve just put on the first coat of the protective topcoat, and noticed tiny bubbles. Did you also experience this? They dry and pop, but the surface is a little rough. Is this normal? Any help would be appreciated as I’ve only top coated the doors so far, and won’t continue if the rough texture stays.

    1. Did you sand before putting on the topcoat? The paint should be sanded with superfine sandpaper before applying this product. It will be gritty if you don’t.

  11. I have some older wooden chairs that I would like to paint but to make a long story short I’ve had alot of grief trying to figure out what kind of a top coat to put on that will hold up well as these chairs are what we use every day around the table and I have 3 small children. My question is, will the rustoleum matte clear top coat work and be durable for kitchen chairs? I don’t want to have to mess with reapplying stuff all the time! I’m making my own chalk paint using plaster of paris and an off white latex paint. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thx.

    1. I’ve heard this product yellows slightly with white. And with the plaster of paris, I am not sure this is the right product.I would use polycrylic by minwax in your case.

      1. I used poly and and it yellowed , I had to do the dresser over. The polycrlic by min wax was real good. Thanks for all these tips

      2. I make my own chalk paint for most of the pieces I paint and sell. I thought everything had to be waxed, until I was told to try patina, and I love it !!!

  12. Your finished piece looks beautiful! Unfortunately I just used the Rustoleum top coat over their white chalk paint and it yellowed instantly! Not sure why as I followed all the directions step by step. Luckily for me it was only a small side table that I can give away for free to someone else as i don’t feel like sanding and painting all over again.

  13. Hi, I just finished painting my furniture cabinets using Rustoleum Serenity Blue chalk paint. I’m going to start putting a clear matte coating on it but afraid about the reviews i read regarding Rustoleum Clear Matte (which is what i have). I read that it can yellow the painted surface. So here are my questions;

    – Did you do anything different in terms of application? Did you use paint brush or rag?
    – Do I have to shake/mix/stir the can of Clear Matte coat before using (i might find this on the instruction on teh can, but…)

I’m scared bec it’s the first time I did it and I’m working on 2 7feet tall furniture cabinets.

    Thank you!

    1. I haven’t seen it yellow personally, but it probably depends on how much sunlight the cabinets get. I use a brush to apply the top coat.

    2. I use Varathane matte finish poly. I have used it on at least 2 dozen Rustoleum Chalked white pieces. It has not yellowed yet! I don’t know where to get it except at Menards. But I know not everyone has that.

  14. Hi Brooke. I tried using the rustoleum chalk paint protective coat tonight and it dried streaky. I seem to always end up with a streaky finish with my topcoats. I’m using a brush, I’ve heard that a damp rag works well, do you have an opinion on this? thank you.

  15. I enjoyed your article and plan to try my first chalk painting experience/experiment (?) on my nightstands. I have one question. It appears, in the pictures, that you painted the hardware too. Is that the case? If so, does it adhere well? I had planned to remove the hardware and maybe even replace the pulls.

    Thanks,
    Kristin

    1. Yep! If I am keeping the hardware, I will just apply a quick coat of spray paint! Most cover and hold up over metal just fine! Hope this helps! xo

  16. Have you ever heard of this ever yellowing ? I am upset because I used polycrylic and now it has bleed through and yellowing :/ and I am about to need a top coat for an ivory colored chalk painted table so I don’t wanna mess up again!

    1. Yes! Some products can definitely yellow! Make sure to really read the fine print on the label because most will disclose that it can and will yellow over time. However if you used CHALK paint you will need a specific top coat for that! Rustoluem carries one that I love. You can read about it Top Coat for Chalk Paint

  17. I love this product as well. On my second piece however, it turned brownish in spots as soon as it dried. This also happened, although in far fewer spots on my first piece. I had to repaint with the chalk paint and reapply the “Chalked” protective top coat. Then it turned out beautifully. Can you tell me why this would happen?

    1. It’s reacting to something on the furniture piece. Sanding, deglossing, and degreasing can prevent that from happening most of the time, but sometimes there’s something stubborn that comes up! It happens. I know it’s frustrating! It’s happened to me too. But no brand of paint could prevent that from happening at times.

    2. I took a class on Annie Sloan paint. the teacher said if your piece is 1930-40’s or older you need to seal it first because there is always something that will come thru on your finish. Its something they used in their products back then, and it doesnt matter how many times you paint over it, it will come back thru. unless you strip the finish first which defeats the purpose of using chalk paint.

  18. I am trying to get an antique look as well as distressed. How can I do that with those product. I am trying to stay away from wax as well. Thanks

    1. Sand away! Also, you can layer the paint colors on top of each other so that when you sand one, you can see another paint color poking through! You can use dark wax to distress it, and then seal it with this product after also. Food for thought!

  19. I use the clear coat on white Chalked Paint by Rustoleum all the time and they have never yellowed once! If it goes on streaky, try a better quality brush. I love their paint and the matte finish, but didn’t get a good result when I used the finish on stained wood. The directions only specify paint, so good to stick to that. Best thing about this product – it is halkvthe price of ANnie Sloan paint!

  20. You should read the bad reviews for Rustoleum Matte Topcoat on the Home Depot website before you buy this product!! I would not buy this!!!

    1. This is good to know! I will go check them out! But, for the record, I have never had a problem, and I’ve used it dozens of times.

      1. I agree. I’ve been using it for a while now, and prefer it to wax, and have great resulsts. I have read not to use over wax because it’s water based and the wax is made to reply water. But if others have had success I might get brave. I have repainted with chalk paint over the matte poly without any problems. I think you might be right about the tannins causing the yellowing.

  21. Hi everyone,
First time using these paints, love the chalk paint itself, using serenity blue! Found this amazing wardrobe to do up and was feeling really good about it, painted, distressed it!! Was looking amazing!! Until the top coat!….. Yellowed instantly! I’m devastated and don’t know what to do to fix it!

  22. I repurpose all kinds of furniture, and I use, and make, my own chalk paint. In all fairness, I have never had to “re wax” anything. One good coat, done right, will never need to be re -waxed. 😉 I have used other protective coatings, and they all leave brush strokes, even with top quality brushes. If this one suggested doesn’t do that, I’m all in! With waxing, if you are feeling a residue, or stickiness or any other kind of odd feeling, to the touch, then the wax has not been applied and buffed properly, which is an easy process with the waxes available today. It should seal and shine it up, but never leave a weird feel to the piece. That said, if brushing on a top coat can be done with out leaving brush strokes, It is a quicker process, and I can’t wait to try it.

  23. I have already waxed my table, but it is a table for kids! My original plan was to Polycrylic it over the wax, but found out that doesn’t work well together. Would this work over the wax?

    1. I’ve used this over wax, and it did great. It probably depends what brand of wax and how much you put on it, but I would try it in an inconspicuous place first.

  24. hey i just used chalk paint on a peice that i an doing .but i didnt distress.do you have to distress whem you use chalk paint? i used the one by home decor.and someone at the store said i can seal it with mod podge? should i go and get the rustoleum clear coat?

    1. You don’t have to distress, but you should sand lightly {more like wipe} with a very high grit sand paper just to smooth out the finish to the touch. I would not recommend sealing with mod podge.

  25. Hi!

I’m using these products on my kitchen cabinets. How many coats of the top coat do you recommend?
    Thanks so much!

  26. Hi,
I used rustoleum linen chalk paint with the clear protective coat. I’m not loving the color I picked and wonder if I can paint a new chalk paint color over the top coat? Any help appreciated!

  27. Beautiful, where can I buy the BB Frosh Chalk Paint Powder, and I believe you’d start with White paint, correct… Thanks for showing us that we don’t need to use wax to achieve that look.. ?

  28. I’ve been reading all the comments, And it seems to me everyone is having a problem with the top coat. They all seemed to be painting there peices some shade of White. I thought that can’t be a coincidence, I’m thinking there must be a reaction with White.Don’t ask me why, I’m not a chemist lol! So I suggest using a clear wax..Wish you luck I’m getting ready to do the same, not with White. ?

  29. Brooke I am doing my dinning table and want to seal the top so the sweat cups won’t be an issue…is this the right product for that or should I use a matte poly instead?

  30. I used the Rustoleum Chalked in Crimson Red to paint an old buffet. It was looking more on the dusty rose side so I mixed in a bit of red paint I had on hand and it began looking much better. After I added the Rustoleum Matte Clear Top Coat it now looks more on the bourdeaux side than red. I was wondering about now trying red paint thinned with water (kind of like a whitewash idea) to lighten it up a bit but not sure if I can do that over the top coat.

    1. Hi Sylvia. If you do a whitewash, then you will still need to topcoat it afterwards. Otherwise the project won’t be protected. You could glaze it with red, that might be a better plan. Search how to glaze on All Things Thrifty and you will find the instructions.

    2. You can do that! I have experimented a lot over the year’s redoing boring furniture, and when I’m not satisfied with the result I just repaint. I have also mixed different brands of paint with eachother until I get what I want. You can find great tips on YouTube when you can’t find any solution! Like how to make the best chalk paint! How to get that destressed look. Colour choices, etc. AND HAVE FUN DEAR FRIEND’S!??

    1. With other chalk paints, you need to sand lightly to get it smooth before applying wax or topcoat, so if Amy Howard is similar to those paints, then yes, you need to sand lightly after the paint dries.

  31. Can you use this product with Amy Howard paint? Do you have to sand before using this product? I painted my oak dining room table black with Amy Howard chalk paint.

    1. I’ve never used Amy Howard, but I would try it in an inconspicuous place and see what it does. I’ve used it with a lot of brands, so I would guess that it would work great.

  32. I painted a piece of furniture with the Rustoleum Chalk Paint and using an oil based stain over the top (the application & wipe off method to darken) … Should I still put a top coat on after the stain? It’s just being used in the kitchen against the wall for T.V. and storing things inside like wine glasses.

  33. hi!
ive done a few different techniques of distressing now- and ive being so disapointed. especially when i actually spent alot of money of a tv cabinet and it just looks shocking.
so When i went to bunnings this lovely lady showed me this paint im optomistic il get it right this time! hoefully!
all my furniture i want to redo, so i no it wil cost me a bit.
so im trialing on a smal book shelf before i embark on thr bug jobs.
my question: finally u say lol
al furniture has being sanded n painted white w black sanded back edges, .. can i just paint over w chalk paint? then sand back? or do i have to sand everything back to wood?( which wil be a mission!)
    be great for any feedback
    thanks
    michele

  34. I painted my kitchen table with linen white chalk paint and distressed it. Applied the clear topcoat and next morning went to look at it and it was yellow…. Everywhere. Not a pretty yellow. Just yuck yellowing. Could have cried. Now what?

  35. The chalked matte top coat turns your work yellow. Don’t recommend. It’s inconsistent. In some areas yellow. In some not. It has terrible ratings. But the chalked paint is good for the money.

  36. I’ve been using the Rustolium Chalk spray paint & always love the results. I’ve used it on metals, wood & composite with excellent results. It dries fast, usually takes 2 light coats, & if you spray too heavy & the paint starts to run just take a paint brush to smooth it. Very easy product to use. I will have to try the clear. The only colors my Home Depot carries is Aged grey, white linen, & charcoal. Love all of them.

  37. Hey I have a quick question is it okay to apply this top chalked top coat then apply my antiquing glaze over that so I can play with it more and then apply another layer over the glaze?

    Ashley

  38. Hi there!

Any idea if I can use this finish over a chalk painted table that also has a wax finish? I have a table that’s legs were previously painted with chalk paint & have a darker wax coating to them. I am now painting the top of the table to match the legs & obviously want to use the wax so it has the same look, but I am concerned about the top not holding up too well since it is a kitchen table & will be used a lot. Any idea if I can use this ON TOP of a wax finish?

    Thank you!

  39. I have used Rustoleum chalk paint and sealer for months and love it. I also use their chalk spray paint and I’m very satisfied with the results.

  40. I am using chalk for a bookcase. Actually these are 3 crates that will sit on top of each other. Do they have to be waxed? Especially where books will be on inside, does it need wax? This top coat that you are talking about, is it painted on or sprayed?

    1. They have both brush on and spray version of the top coat. I would definitely put a top coat on the part that the books will sit on to protect the chalk paint.

  41. I too have used Country Chic Tough Coat and found it easy to apply and very durable for table tops. They have recently added hemp oil to their line of finishing products as well.

  42. I have a question I hope you can help me with. I just painted a dresser with this exact paint, Rustoleum Chalked. I used the Rustoleum Chalked Matte Clear Protective Topcoat to finish it. I am happy with the look of the piece but am wondering how durable this finish will be to standard wear and tear? By accident I had a drop of water fall on a drawer after I had applied 1 coat of Topcoat, and it definitely marred the finish. Not sure how long the water was there, it may have been several hours. But it made me worry about the durability of this topcoat. Would you recommend any other finish to make it more durable? Should I apply a couple of coats of the topcoat? What do you suggest? Thanks.

    1. Yes, I would definitely put more than one coat. But, honestly any topcoat wouldn’t withstand a few hours of water. It’s just not the nature of damage from water. I usually do two-three coats depending on the type of furniture it is.

  43. Hi Brooke,
The finish looks great. Nice job.

Will that top coat work on other paint types?

    Thanks,
    Danny

    1. I have totally used it on other paint types. I don’t know if it’s meant for others. But I tend to make my own rules. Time will tell if it holds up.

  44. I just used Rustoleum white chalk paint on a table – I also want to glaze it – Question: Do I use the topcoat before the glaze or the reverse? Thx

  45. Hi Brooke, I have two questions for you. I hope this isn’t too old of a post where you won’t get to see them. I am just new to chalk painting.
    1. Due to poor light at night when I was doing my second coat of chalk paint, I seen we missed a couple spots in the top of my vanity the next day. By this time, we had already put the rustoleum matte top coat on. Because the missed spots were all along the same piece, I decided to take some more chalk paint and just paint one brush stroke (small brush) along the edge covering them up. I am sure unknow that I am going to say, when I put the second coat of top coat on, I can really notice the difference and see the whole brush stroke along the edge. Any suggestion for fixing this? I am afraid if I painted the whole piece again you would still see the line. Someone mentioned putting some of the chalk paint into the top coat to blend it. But if that is what I do, am I using the coloured top coat over the entire area or just the area other than the one line?
    2. We chalk painted my bathroom vanity and I was wondering if the rustoleum matte clear coat is strong enough protection from water damage or if I should be using something else in top to protect it. Hate to do all this work to have it ruined in a few weeks due to dripped water etc.
Thank you for any help. Greatly appreciated.

    1. Just sand down the vanity a little bit in that area and paint it again. Then when that is dry, seal it again.

I have used it in a bathroom myself. But, it’s definitely not as protective as a higher gloss type of product. So I am guessing that I will need to reseal mine in a few years.

  46. Hi there,

Beautiful work! I’m in the midst of using this chalk paint on my bedroom set & also ?????????? It! I am using a clear, followed by dark, followed by clear wax process. I love that I can enhance the distressing with this. I’ve been worried about the durability of the top coat and want to finish with the protective coat you applied here. Can this be used as a final coat on top of wax?

  47. I’ve chalk painted & waxed a chair. I would rather use this top coat because it is a kitchen chair. Can I use this top coat over Annie Sloan wax?

If not, could I do a light sanding then this top coat?

  48. If I still want to use wax but also use top coat, which should be used first? Is it possible to use both?

  49. it has been 1.5 years since you post about the top coat for chalk paint. have you notice any yellowing? I’ve been thinking about painting my kitchen in white, I sure not want to do wax since it’s a high traffic area but I can’t afford to find out the top coat yellow the white paint afterward. Thanks.

    1. It hasn’t yellowed as far as I can tell, but it wasn’t on white. So I’m not sure if it would yellow on white. I’m so sorry I’m not much help!

  50. Try Benjamin Moore Stays Clear polyurethane in flat. Even with two coats you can feel the chalky finish of the paint still and it’s very durable. Cheaper than the Rustoleum product you are using!

  51. I have seen a number of folks wondering what to do with their chalk paint top coats. I have your solution. I own a custom furniture/cabinet shop and it is never wise nor recommended by professionals to use wax as a top coat for chalk paint applications in high use areas ie. kitchens, dining room tables, chairs, doors, etc. If you want something that will last and not require constant maintenance making you debate why on earth you decided to use chalk paint in the first place. Then use ONLY Varathane water-based polyurethane in Crystal Clear. It WILL NOT YELLOW even over the whitest chalk paint. Our customers demand high-end products and after 40 years we have found what works. The Varathane poly is our go to product for chalk paint top coats. We spray it on and allow it to dry for 24 hours and then spray a second coat for a professional look. A spray can version of it is available as well. We use that for small projects and touch-ups. But you may certainly use an excellent quality brush instead. Such as the Purdy UniformFlow Brush (Polyester) that is sold at Lowe’s stores exclusively. You can purchase it online if you don’t have a Lowe’s near you. Just stay away from foam rollers for this, you will regret it. A number of bubbles are created and just aren’t worth the hassle. TIP: Paint a bit of cardboard with the chalk paint, when you are doing your project. Then practice with the poly over the paint on the cardboard so that you know just how much pressure and poly to apply to get the right look and avoid brush strokes. Remember thin coats are best for anything to do with painting.
The best thing about using Varathane’s Water-based Crystal Clear Poly is that unlike wax, you don’t have to keep reapplying it down the road. Giving you more time to enjoy your project, not slave over it.

Note: The Varathane is available in multiple sizes that are in matte, satin, semi-gloss and gloss. The spray can is not available in matte. Here is a link to the product’s page: Varathane Crystal Clear Polyurethane
    Happy Painting!

    1. I did 2 coats of chalk paint over paneling and days later covered luckily a small area with Varathane water based polyurethane crystal clear satin and it instantly turned yellow…so many contradicting product S ! Aaahhh

    1. I did one coat of topcoat. And I have used it many times without streaks. That’s interesting. What color did you apply it over?

  52. I chalk painted my kitchen cupboards and kitchen table . . will this product help seal it . it’s all done in black

    1. Yes, but be careful not to put it on too thick or it will not dry completely clear. I have heard of it drying white in some spots if it’s caked on too thick.

  53. Hi! I’m so glad there is someone that feels as I do about wax. I really like rustoleum, ever since I used their product to redo my kitchen cabinets. In their kid comes a top coat that I really like.
My question is…I have a piece that I aged with brown wax, because it’s so hard to get glaze here in California. I wanted to cover it with this Rustoleum top coat, but….*sigh* I’ve read that I can’t do that since I used wax.
Do you agree? What would happen if I did that?

  54. Love the Rustoleum brand chalk paint and top coat. If you can find the product in a hardware or paint store in your area they can mix it to any color you want and best of all it costs less than many other brands!

  55. I used black chalk paint to redo a bedroom suite. Then used the rustoleum matte clear as a top coat. In the corners and in a little groove across the front of the bed it must have been a little thicker, and it dried white. Any ideas on what I can do? I was hoping it was just taking these spots a little longer to dry, but I waited overnight and they are still white.

    1. Darn! I would repaint them with the black chalk paint directly over the clear coat and then reseal it but be careful to make sure it’s thinner this time.

  56. My local Home Depot only had a spray can matte top coat. Have you used this? Does it work the same?

    1. YES! I love it! I use that sometimes when I’m in a hurry. I think the brush on kind may work better in the long run because it goes on thicker, but I have used the spray on kind dozens of times.

  57. Hi Brooke,
When you used the finish coat, I assumed you put it on with a brush, do the brush strokes show when it is dry?

  58. I am painting black chalk lettering on a gray board it’s a baby name plaque if I sand it do I need to seal it or can I just leave it without any thing over it. It’s just going to hang on the wall. They want a totally matte finish nothing shinny. Thank you

    1. I would still seal it if it were me. That way it can be wiped down and dusted. But, no it’s not going to be too shiny with this product. It will be a flat finish.

  59. Hi
I have already waxed the top of my dresser and I hate it. How can I remove the wax to apply the matte finish instead?

  60. Any suggestions on how to seal a wooden counter top painted with chalk paint thats going to be used in the bathroom? Trying to figure out the best way, especially to keep safe from water and humidity.

  61. I am planning to chalk paint for the first time. I will be doing wooden end tables, coffee table. Tops will be done with a dark gel stain and some parts will be done in chalk paint. I plan to distress it a bit. My questions are: what number of sand paper do I use to distress and will the Rustoleum’s topcoat be strong enough where I don’t have to use coasters?

  62. this product is amazing. i used it over two coats of annie sloan ‘french linen’ and the piece is gorgeous. the look is much more sophisticated than a waxed piece. try it, you’ll be so happy you did. it’s definitely a matte finish.

  63. I have used the Chalked Paint and the Matte Finish and love it. Serenity Blue is my favorite. Wish it came in more colors. I even stenciled my bathroom floor in the Aged Gray and White Linen. Love the Charcoal Gray too. LOVE,. LOVE, LOVE !

  64. Reading through some of the comments it seams like primer may be the solution?! I just found a primer by Zinsser and it’s for oder removal and it goes on white and drys clear. So this works really well in the case of not needing to cover stains. It goes on supper smooth a little goes a long ways. I have not used for painting any light piece yet but I’m doing a piece now with Rust-Oleum Chalk 0aint in charcoal, and so far so good! It’s Zinsser oder killing primerin clear

  65. This rustoleum product does yellow over white paint so be warned! I use a polycrylic sealer that is of course water based and it’s called polyvine. It will give a wax finish if you choose the wax one. I go in with one coat of the satin finish then 24 hours later another coat of the flat matte to really seal the deal. Perfect substitute for wax finish and you can still use wax over it if you like the look for details!

  66. Thanks for the tip– I am having the hardest time with my chalk paint streaking.. What am I doing wrong??

  67. I used the Rustoleum top coat recently with mixed results. It worked amazing over the lighter colored Rustoleum chalked paints I tried, but was horrible over the black colored Restoleum chalked paint. It left horrible white streaks and left the paint much lighter/whiter. I tried it twice and tried their spray version on the black as well. That didn’t go evenly at all. I finally resorted to their clear wax for the black bedroom set I did. It worked great, but I was disappointed as I had hoped to use a more durable top coat. Has anyone else had this issue?

  68. I tried Rust-oleum spray chalk paint today. I thought it would be a good time to test since I was working on a Jenny Lynn crib (lots of spindles). I was very disappointed with the spray. After 2 coats I gave up and finished with a brush. Maybe it would be okay for signs….

  69. I’ve been using their matte clear on a few different projects. Most recently I wasn’t able to get any and mixed calcium carbonate with a high gloss clear and it flattened it out just as good as the matte finish. I mixed 1 part CC to 3 parts clear gloss. It gave the same effect. I’ve also don’t that with regular paint to make my own chalk paint. Try it out. The gloss paint is about 1/3 the price of the matte finish.

  70. Hi, I use wax on all of my pieces, wither it’s inside or out.
A wood working friend gave me this advice….

Make sure your was is completely rubbed in and nothing is left on the white T-shirt.

1-4 coats of CLEAR Shellac (zinsser bulls eye). Be sure to sand very lightly between
coats, 220 or greater will work fine. The amount of coats is dependent on ware & tear.

Now you can put water based or oil based top coats if you wish. I like a MAT Finish & use Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish.

I’ve had my furniture out for the last 3 years in the weather, not a problem….

  71. I use Rustoleum and love it! I love the Matt top coat too! If you have trouble with yellowing or need to touch up or change a project, just apply chalk paint over top coat. I’ve done it and all went great! Been 12months and no yellowing

  72. Help!!!!! First time with chalk paint (made my own) following instructions on amts. Tried to apply Rustoleum clear coat and it’s pulling paint off. What didn’t I do or what should I have done. Please help soon!

  73. Worked so long on my China cabinet and thought I would try this new rustoleum and the entire thing yellowed and it was horrible. Had to re sand entire thing. I will never use this again.

  74. Hi Brooke. I had some chairs redone with white rustoleum chalk paint. They were sealed with rustoleum matte clear sealant. The seat part of the chairs are very dry and they’re difficult to slide out bottoms back and forth across the seat. Do you have any suggestions?

  75. I used Rustoleum Farmhouse Red Chalk paint with a roller, 3 coats. Looked really good. I then used the Rustoleum matte top coat. Never used any of these products before. The Red looked wonderful on a metal cabinet, after 3 coats but after waiting way longer than the time for drying suggested, seemed like applying the topcoat took the red out in some places. Not all the way but I can see some lighter streaks. Used a brush for the top coat. It looks milky white out of the can but it does dry clear thankfully. Also, the topcoat really runs if you don’t catch it soon enough. I hope it drys so you can’t see run marks but I’m thinking maybe not. Not sure what I could have done better. Followed directions. I don’t want to attempt a second coat so hopefull one will be enough.
