New Wooden Stair Treads REVEAL…FINALLY!

I am so excited to share my NEW STAIRS today! My computer and external hard drives have been giving me fits for MONTHS. So, some of the files I needed for the reveal have been tied up. I had to pay to have some of the files recovered. What. A. NIGHTMARE.

I’ll stop complaining, and get to the goods. Don’t forget when I introduced my stair project as “the Saddest Stairs you have ever seen” because they were so so sad. I’ll prove it with a before shot to remind you.  I won’t tell you that our stairs were like this for months. 🙂 I had one of those moments that I couldn’t stand the ugly carpet one more minute, so I started removing it without a solid plan in place. Whoopsie. Sad Stairs

We we did a ton of research, we decided on an awesome US based company called Nustair.  We used NuStair treads and we loved them. The treads are solid oak that are milled right here in the US, and we stained them to look just like our new wood floors.

First we had to remove the carpet, pad and all of the staples. For more details, tips, and tricks check out THIS POST about carpet removal.

Then, we got busy installing our new Nustair treads.

Step 1: We used a miter saw to cut the treads {the part you walk on} and a table saw to trim the risers {the white part} to fit the stairs. We used Nustair’s measuring tool and it was very useful.

The great thing about the Nustair system, is that we didn’t have to remove the original particle board treads. The Nustair treads and risers go right over the top of the existing stairs. You don’t need to trim the front lip off the stairs!

We labeled them clearly by writing the stair number on the bottom of the treads.

Step 2. We installed the three bottom steps because of the funky angles involved.  We used an angle tool to help us with this task.

Step 3: We stained the bottom stairs after they were installed. {We had our floors color matched at our local Jones Paint and Glass location. They have a man there that they call the “stain master” who is a genius with stain.

We used spray on stain Golden Oak Spray Dye Stain VDS1060 first, let it dry, and then used Valspar Antique Mahogany Wiping Stain second.

Step 4: After it dried completely overnight, we then sealed them with satin floor poly.

Step 5: The other treads above the bottom steps were stained and sealed before installation.

Step 6: After the stain and poly dried completely, we installed the other stair treads. This only took about an hour. It was so fun to watch!

I video’s the process to prove how simple it really was! Check out the entire process below:

Since I’m a sucker for before and afters, so check out the difference side by side.

We have had some concerns on our previous posts about wood stairs being slippery. We haven’t had any issues with this yet, but we might install a carpet runner along the center of the stairs to combat this issue. But, for now, we are enjoying our beautiful stairs.

What a change from the ugliest stairs in the world.

Hope you like them!

Brooke

This post was not sponsored by NuStair, but I did receive the treads for free to review. We loved them and would definitely use them again if the time ever comes again.

  1. Oh they are so DREAMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would so love to do this in our home. The quote from the flooring place had it equivalent to redoing the entire house. Crazy!!! Beautiful work- maybe you should just come for a visit for a week & we can knock it out ourselves 🙂

  2. Absolutely gorgeous! What a labor of love this must have been. Well-worth all your hard work!

  3. Love it! We want to do this with our stairs also. I really really hate the carpet. Can you post a picture or let me know what/how you did the carpet to the wood transition at the top of the stairs? I’ve seen so many different options and wondering what you did!

  4. Holy freaking amazing Batman!!! BROOKE!! It’s sooo good!!! 100x better than carpet! I can’t even handle it. Amazing job yet again! Love your face!
