How to paint your front door in a SNAP!

Hello friends! Jo here! Are you enjoying this warm weather as much as I am? It makes me want to paint and plant allll the things! Ha! I get anxious because I want to do everything at once so I have to remind myself that it takes time and to sllllooooow down!

Anyway, when I originally saw the listing picture of my house, I totally thought the front door was blue! I don’t know if it was because of the lighting that day or a photoshop trick but when I found out it was actually black, I was bummed. But being the DIYer that I have become, {I use that term very lightly!} šŸ˜‰ I decided I would just paint it blue myself! And the truth is, it needed to be repainted.So. Bad! It wasn’t done very well the first time so it definitely needed some love!

Jos House Makeover SeriesSee, it looks blue right?! šŸ˜‰

So here is what you’ll need to tackle this project:

  • a cleaner of some sort
  • A rag to clean with
  • Sander with sand paper
  • foam roller {Similar to this one}
  • angled brush {any will do, I used a small purdy brush}
  • painters tape
  • Primer {I used Glidden Gripper pictured below}
  • Sherwin Williams SNAPdry paint

To start, you will need to clean the entire surface. I sprayed it really good with the hose first, then using a household cleaner, I scrubbed all of the dirt off. I then made sure I rinsed it really well afterwards too so there wasn’t any soap residue.

Now that the door is completely dry, it is time to tape everything off. I taped off the window, the lock and doorknobs and then around the bottom.  how to paint your front door 6

After tape. it’s time to sand. I sanded the entire door and while this took much longer than I would have liked, I am glad I did it… just take a look at how bad it was. And the black showed everything!

Once all the sanding is done and you feel like your door is nice and smooth, wipe the entire thing down again, making sure to get all of the dust off!

Now it’s time to prime! Using the pattern below, apply your primer!7864-01-SHER-SnapDry-Launch-Landing-Page-Numbers-541{source}

gripper{This is the primer I used. I had it leftover from my kitchen cupboards  and it covers great!}

After that is completely dry, it is time to paint!!

Here are a few tips I have:

-Make sure your door is NOT in the sun and that it is coolish to the touch. If you door is warm, the paint will dry sooooo much faster than it already does! Trouble.

-Paint quick but precise and do it exactly as the pattern tells you above. It works well.

-Paint inside the squares first using the roller on the flat part and your angled brush in the grooves.how to prime your front door 28

The color blue I chose was Regatta Blue by Sherwin Williams. It is the same color Brooke used to paint her boys dressers! I loved it so much I knew I needed it somewhere!

 In the end, I decided to leave the trim white! I love how it makes that blue pop! how to paint your front door 21

Look how much better that looks. There are still some imperfections for sure but it looks so so good! DSC_0841 how to paint your front door 20

I just love how it all turned out!  Just FYI: the hanging planter, the white trio herb pots and the welcome mat are all from Target!  I made the wreath and the milk can is from my grandpa’s amazing stash! Let me know if you need any other sources.

Thank you so much for popping in today! See you next month!

  1. Hi there! I actually had a few questions from a post you guys made a few years ago about the inground trampoline. Is there anyway you’d be up for emailing about it? I don’t want to clog your comments up with it.

    Thanks so much!

  2. So did you paint the part of the door that gets hidden by the trim? Like if you open the door, is there the old paint around the edges and on the sides?

    1. So on the trim inside the door, next to the hinges was left white like the back of the door. The other side, where the lock is is painted the same color blue. I hope this helps! xo

  3. Thank You for this! Now if only you can help me choose the right color – how many swatches can a girl have!! Love the instructions very helpful!
