Painting over vinyl

                   Hey all,  Fancy Farmgirls here!

Schools back in session over here and it’s freed up a little time to do what we love!

Furniture makeovers and home decor.

I’m loving these cute new benches in my entryway.

Cute gold metal X bases.  Check!

Gold nailhead trim.  Check!

Perfectly blue.  Check!

Perfect for the entry!

A perfect Home Goods find?  Not quite! …

They were a thrift store find Marg found for $15 and she went spray paint happy on their bases before getting a genuine “before” shot.  The bases were an orange stained wood.

She called me with the idea that she was going to paint her vinyl benches.

What!?

Now you guys know by now, we love a good paint makeover…

but vinyl?!

I stand corrected.  She brought them over for a little photoshoot and I about died!

Aren’t they the CUTEST!!!

The base was given a quick coat of Rust-oleum’s metallic bright gold

and Marg’s nailhead trim painting hack was brilliant!

Stick them in an empty milk jug to hold them in place for spraying.

Styrofoam and cardboard will also work nice for this.

She painted over the brown vinyl with the prettiest blue chalk paint

Rust-oleum’s Serenity Blue

First coat on and waiting for the second.

We gave it a good top wax coat for protection and added the nail head trim back on.

And now for some fun staging.

It added a little glam to my front entryway with the gold and the fur and the gold nail head trim dont ya think!

View from the office.

They then headed upstairs to Avery’s room (still a blank canvas) šŸ™

I’ve told her I’m just waiting for that “inspiration” piece but after 10 months, she’s not buying it anymore.

They look right at home for now.  Maybe Marg will forget they’re here šŸ™‚

We used this same blue/gold combo on Marg’s piano room makeover.

  1. Does it need to be chalk paint? And what wax did you use? Thanks!!!! I have some chairs I may paint instead of recover…

  2. Those are SO cute! You stated you used a wax on them.. can you share what you used? How do you think these would hold up to every day use? I have a set that I would like to try this on but we use them daily and not sure how they would hold up. Thank you!

  3. The rustoleum spray paint adheres to plastic. I wonder how it would be on vinyl that is flexible? I will be looking at vinyl pieces with a new eye. Thanks for sharing.

  4. Lovely pics, ladies! I especially like the pics from the project in progress. I’m wondering how the painted finish on the vinyl will hold up. Will it crack? Also, did you do a primer coat before the chalk paint? And lastly, what kind of wax did you use?
