How to blow up a Watermelon, Kids’ Messy Activity

My kids went to cousin camp this summer at my sister in law Jessica’s {from Lou Lou girls}. While they were there, they exploded a watermelon!! Ever since, they have been begging to do it again.

As you can see, their faces expressing pure joy say it all.

For this fun and messy family activity, you need:

  • two extra large bags of elastic bands,
  • Huggies® Wipes {Essential because they are gentle on skin but thick enough to clean the mess}
  • a few cheap rain ponchos
  • and a watermelonkids-messy-blow-up-a-watermelon-13-of-13

We placed the watermelon in the bowl at first because it was hard for the kids to keep it upright.

They put elastics on the watermelon one by one. London’s face is so funny! At this point, the watermelon is starting to bulge, so she knows the explosion is coming.

I love this activity because they definitely need to work together to make it work. Each child holds the sides of the elastic and they pull it down together. It took about 30 minutes from start to finish, and it definitely took a bag and a half of elastics.

As the watermelon explodes, the sight is crazy! Just check out that picture below! It RAINS watermelon!

The kids were covered in watermelon juice from head to toe.

The melon was yummy, and we brought the large piece home to eat later.

The Huggies® wipes were essential in the clean up process! The kids wiped off easily and quickly.

Little brother Creed had fun eating the melon with his hands. 🙂

It was definitely a success, and the kids have already asked to do it again. Since Watermelons are so cheap at Costco, I think we will probably give in and do it again sooner than later!
