Home Remedies for Yeast Infection that do and don’t work.

Today we are talking about Home Remedies for Yeast Infection.

I wanted to get right to the point, so that if you are male I can warn you that you probably don’t care about this post. But, if you are still curious, be my guest and read on.

I’ll get right to it. Friends, the last few months have been tough. I’ve been suffering with reoccurring yeast infections and it’s sooooooo freaking annoying. I think I’ve had four or five in the last six months.

I’m embarrassed about it obviously, and I didn’t want to call the dr again about it! In fact, two yeast infections ago I was like “well, let me try and white knuckle this and just use over the counter remedies and it will eventually go away.” NOPE that was a horribly bad idea. I ended up calling the dr anyway after a few days of misery. Luckily when I called, he gave me an extra refill, so I didn’t have to call him again the next time. WEEELLL, the next one came quickly after so I burned through that RX quickly.

I have been  hard on myself about it, and I know there are lots of reasons why I could be experiencing yeast overgrowth {due to my inter web diagnostic research}. When they began, I had just gotten a new IUD, so that could be the culprit. The amount of sugar in my diet could definitely be contributing. I take a probiotic and I eat yogurt…blah blah blah.

But, after I resisted calling the dr and tried the over the counter remedies, you know the ones that say “Will cure 99% of yeast infections”, Lies. I tell ya. PURE DEVILISH LIES.

It was bad. I was miserable, and I swore I would never do that again. Well, about a month later, here came another yeast infection. Gaaaaaah, darn it….should I call the dr!?!

Well, before biting the bullet and calling the dr AGAIN, I decided to try one last remedy that a friend told me about. Thank heaven for good friends. We were talking about yeast infections in my book club awhile ago, and one of my friends/members in book club is a nurse, and she told us about a home remedy that worked for her {Thanks Lara!}.

I’ve decided that at this point, I would try anything to not have to call the dr again, so I looked up the remedy she had mentioned, and I did it. Two days later, my yeast infection was gone. I know that my journey to figure out my problem may not be over, but at least I’ve found something that works!

What you need:

Step 1: Mix 4 Tbsp of Coconut Oil  in a small glass ramekin.

Step 2: Place in the microwave for 10-20 seconds until oil is melted into a liquid.

Step 3: Add 12 drops of Melaleuca Essential Oil and 12 drops of Lavender Essential Oil and stir well.

Step 4: Pour into squeeze bottle or use a funnel to pour the mixture into your silicone ice cube tray.  {This recipe makes 4-5 molds, but you can break them into 2 or 3 pieces each to use}

Step 5: Place your mold into the freezer until the oils are frozen. It usually takes about 10-15 minutes.

Step 6: Remove the oil sticks and break them into smaller pieces

Step 7:  Store in a freezer ziplock bag.

Step 8:  Before bed, break about 1/3 of the stick off and use right before bed. It will start to melt immediately, so you may need to wear a pad that night.

I hope that this remedy helps someone else because it’s been extremely helpful to me! Now, I need to figure out why I am having the reoccurring yeast infections. If you have any advice, feel free to leave it for me in the comments!

It’s been a while since I wrote a deep post on All Things Thrifty, and today this post is bordering the TMI line. But, maybe the need and urge I have to share might be for someone else out there, so that’s why I’m pushing through my inner “scared” self and writing this post.

Being raw is scary. But, I recently started a journal section on All Things Thrifty for this purpose. I feel strongly that sharing the “real” along with the “colorful, pretty, and delicious” parts of life is very important.  The digital world that we live in can become a highlight reel instead of a REAL REEL.

Just giving you a heads up that you will be seeing more posts that aren’t necessary “happy” posts. But, if you want to hear my thoughts about how I’m dealing with real life situations, stick around. I’m excited to finally break through the barrier I had created for myself.

  1. Oh believe me, I’ll be posting something soon as well on the TMI scale. I’ve been having the same problem, but mine is caused by being in Menopause. I was lucky enough to so far never have hot flashes going through Perimenopause (yay!), but now that I’m in full-blown menopause, I’m having some not so nice issues down there. Right now I’m trying a combination of probiotics designed especially for female issues, a cream that I found on Amazon & a pH balancing gel that I found on Amazon. If they work together to help, I’ll be posting about it. Good Luck! I love that your remedy is natural and how clever with the water bottle ice tray!

  2. Not TMI at all! Thank you so much for sharing! I haven’t had one in a while but when I got married I got them all the time! Apparently they’re like UTIs and newlyweds get them a lot! I even got BV from having an untreated one while I was on vacation! I avoid going to the doctor with bacterial infections (bronchitis, ear infections and the like) because I know that every time I get an antibiotic I WILL get a yeast infection and I WILL need 3 doses (not 1 or 2 like normal people) to get rid of it and even that doesn’t always do the trick! I am totally pinning this to a secret board for the next time I will inevitably get one. Again, thank you so much!

  3. I have struggled with yeast infections my whole adult life, eating yogurt EVERY day and probiotics too! Usually getting about 4-7 infections a year, and needing the double RX from the doctor, one pill never did it!
I did the Whole 30, 18 months ago, cutting out grains, carbs, sugar and YEAST. The Whole 30 also cuts out dairy and I was super worried about not getting my daily yogurt, well no flare up for 30 days even without yogurt. I decided that if maybe I stopped feeding the yeast then I might do better. I now eat a modified Whole 30 diet, I totally eat carbs and sugars, but limited, and have not had one yeast infection in the past 18 months, EVEN being on antibiotics once! I rarely eat things with yeast, my sugar intake is WAY down and bonus I lost 20 lbs.

  4. When I was first married I had such a severe yeast infection that the doctorvput myself and my husband on medication. It cleared up, but I still got them and was able to treat them with over the counter. I learned to ask for medication when I was given antibiotics. I do not have them often anymore due to a total hysterectomy, but now am on a medication for diabetes that some times causes yeast infections. I would like to try this more natural remedy than the over the counter. Thanks for sharing.

  5. I had the same problem for twenty years. Yes, twenty years. I took more diflucan than any human should. Switched Doctors and the new doctor gave me a cream that changed my life. I wasn’t having yeast infections it was bacterial. It was an itching, pinching pain that got worse at night. If these are your symptoms. Ask for the cream. I’m on the train commuting to work but email me and I will give u the name of the cream. Ask for it. Give it a try. I wish someone could have given me this cream years ago.

  6. I was diagnosed with Type1 diabetes over 15 years ago. I was also embarrassed about on going yeast infections. But had I gone into the doctor to actually try and figure out why, I may have saved myself many months of pain. Might be worth having your doc do a blood test to see what your sugar levels are. Other symptoms would be constant urination, extreme thirst, blurry vision, and unexpected weight loss. I’m not saying you have it, btw! Just an idea of something to check out…good luck 🙂

  7. I to have had my share of crazy yeast infections. And for a good few months I thought I was having them and was self treating them as such but finally saw my Dr and they weren’t yeast infections. So make sure they really are a true yeast infection.
One thing that I noticed was when I stayed with my extended family I got them a lot. It was cause of their diet that I was also partaking in. When I went very strict with what I ate, the yeast infections went away. I did very healthy straight fruit, veggies, and protein. No white foods, sugars, only the carbs from the fruit and veggies. No, more yeast infections. Maybe this will work for you also.

  8. It might not be a yeast infection at all. Get some PH strips at the drugstore or pool store and check the secretion PH. It might be bacterial vaginosis which requires an antifungal. Or if you are nearing menopause it could be dry, and irritated from the OTC creams. You may need some estratest cream inserted vaginally. Or it could be contact dermatitis from whatever you are washing yourself with. Which will cause increased secretions and itching down there. Try using cetaphil soap or a drugstore vaginal wash in the shower. Anywho, if you are SURE its a yeast infection based on the PH of your vagina , increase vit c intake, add some apple cider vinegar to your diet, cut the sweets – yeast loves an alkali environment.
Try douching with betadine , it does work. What I thought were recurrent yeast infections like yours was vag irritation from shower washes and dryness from menopause. Once I corrected those the symptoms were gone.

  9. High blood sugar will do that to you. Thank you for sharing this info. I will try it next time. Because I get it alot when my sugars are high.

  10. I really hope that you can figure out what is triggering your symptoms and eliminate them! It’s miserable to have anything wrong down there and completely eliminates the need for that new IUD that you have! I had a hormone type IUD in a few years ago when I was having the same problems. I think it was changing my vaginal pH to be more alkaline (which yes, I checked with the strips you can use to check the water in your fish tank). Turned out that I was getting BV and sometimes yeast infections at the same time. It took me switching my shampoo and body wash to all natural products with no SLS, not using TIDE and instead using free and clear detergents, sleeping without underwear, only wearing cotton underwear, avoiding yoga pants, and eating my weight in stonyfield yogurt to get things back to normal. (Stonyfield btw seems to have the most types of probiotic strains of any yogurt I found that are also found in healthy flora down there). I eventually got rid of the hormone IUD in exchange for the copper one. So far so good. Also don’t forget that your husband’s little swimmers are in an alkaline substance so you might benefit from using a condom for a few days if you start to get symptoms.
I really wish you the best of luck. I wish there was more literature out there for women’s health and that it wasn’t so taboo to ask for help!

  11. I’ve been there on and off for 15 years. One super awkward thing is to remember to treat your husband too. He can carry the infection without symptoms. An OTC cream used for a couple weeks should do it. About six months ago I found these boric acid suppositories. They sound crazy, but I use them weekly (and/or after sex), and I’ve been without an infection ever since…which is a record for me.

    1. This is what I have used in the past and it totally works! That and cutting sugars down in my diet (that sh*t is hiding in everything).

  12. Drinking too much pop (soda) can bring on a yeast infection. Not rinsing your outer vaginal area of all soap can too. A good thing to know is to urinate after you have sex. I got all of this info from a pharmacist.
