Grateful for the Past!

Yesterday, I opened up my alumni magazine from Southern Utah University, and I found myself inside. I had completed an interview months ago, but I was unsure of when it would be printed. It was surreal seeing my face along with other alumni members who I look up to. I am honored to have been chosen as one of their alumni spotlights.

SUU is the place where I changed from being a child to an adult. I went to college when I was 17, and I immediately learned a lot of life lessons that I will cherish for the rest of my life. I got married, started having my family, and finished two degrees while attending SUU. I got my bachelor’s degree in Communications emphasizing in Public Relations and Advertising, and my Masters degree in Interpersonal and Corporate Communications. Looking back at those times makes me smile. I am grateful for those experiences.

I thank SUU for:
*Believing in me by choosing me as one of their Ambassadors. This was a turning point in my life. I believe that being able to associate with amazing people helped influence me to be a confident person.
*Lessons learned about myself.
*Having amazing professors who genuinely cared for my success. I graduated in the Communication department and overall my experience was great.
*My marriage to Dan. I met him at SUU. It was a fairy tale, and I’m grateful daily for him.
*Teaching me to be a leader.
*Introducing me to a huge chunk of my friends who I still associate with now
*Helping me find the “good” friends who build you up instead of tear you down.
*Teaching me that it is possible to do hard things.
*Helping me realize that my family is my foundation and an amazing support system
*Lessons on money
*Coaching on being dependable and trustworthy
*An overall amazing education experience
*Teaching me that procrastination is not good
*Demonstrating that a lot can be accomplished on a little sleep :)
*Training me to set goals and not relinquish until they are accomplished

SUU is located in Cedar City, Utah, and I grew up in a small town in Central Utah. I look back at those first few weeks after moving out of the house. What a huge eye opener! I had to learn a lot about being self sufficient, and I immediately began classes that were HARD! It was a shock for a little small-town girl, but it taught me to hunker down and get things done.

THANK YOU SUU for influencing me and helping to mold me into who I am today!

Woo! Go T-birds! haha– Interpersonal Comm. grad '01 here and now I'm searching my brain to remember if we ever had any classes together. In any case, I just loved SUU. It isn't the "fanciest" school around, but it was so easy to feel involved in and I just love Southern Utah! Anyway, I really enjoy your blog– Keep up all the awesome work!!
