Master Bedroom Renovation Part 1: The Before and the PLAN

I am soooo excited to show you our master bedroom renovation! If you have been following along on Instagram, you have seen the room renovation in real time!

In fact, the room reveal post is now LIVE!

This is what the room looked like just a few weeks ago:

The master bedroom was simple and kind of boring, and I hadn’t given it much creative attention. But, in my opinion, that’s 100% ok.

When we moved into our new home in December of 2017, I had BIG dreams and ideas, but sometimes it’s hard to remember that  it takes one space at a time to renovate a home! PLUS, we are a “do as we can afford it” type of family.  We save up before we tackle our next project.  Click here to see some of my other interior room makeovers.

Just for fun, I’d like to show you some before and after photos of the room. I’m a sucker for before and afters.

We don’t  spend tons of money in our projects, so everything we do is on a budget and within our means. We don’t like financing anything for home renovations, so the entire budget for our master bedroom will be approx $2000.

FUN FACT: Dan and I built this king size wingback headboard in 2014, and it has held up AMAZING! This headboard is going downstairs to a guest room, and wanna know something kinda funny?  These lamps in my room cost $8 each and have been in my master bedroom since 2010

The plan:

New wood flooring to match the rest of our main floor.

New fresh wall paint, we chose: Rust-Oleum Interior Wall Paint in French Linen {eggshell sheen} and Rust-Oleum Interior Wall Paint in Black for an accent {also in eggshell sheen}

New bed and nightstands

New lighting

New decor…possibly playing move the decor around in the house

The biggest part of our budget will go to new flooring. I’ve always planned to continue our wood flooring into our bedroom, but it took some searching to find the exact match. So, the first thing we did is tear out the carpet! We found the flooring at a local flooring store by taking a few scrap pieces from our garage and matching it to a sample in their showroom. We were lucky because the showroom manager recognized the flooring and knew exactly what kind it was. The stars aligned, and I’m very grateful for her impeccable memory.

Look how much better the room looks with the new flooring and new wall paint! I will say that the flooring looks more red in pictures than it does in real life. FYI.

The wood flooring in our home is California Classics Montecito Maple.

Dan offered to build me a new bed to save money, but we found a bed on a STEAL of a deal, so we didn’t end up building one. Stay tuned, the reveal will show the new bed.

The reveal post will also have all of the sources for the lighting and decor.

When we got new carpet in the rest of the house, I knew that the long-term plan was to get wood flooring, so we left the beige carpet until we were ready.

Since the carpet was getting replaced, drop cloths were unnecessary. YAY! We started with priming the walls with Zinsser 1-2-3, and then chose Rust-Oleum Home French Linen {Eggshell} for the majority of the walls.

The bay window was the perfect spot for a focal wall, and I love the idea of using black in the bay window.

The French Linen paint is the perfect subtle warm greige. It’s really light, but it’s not white. I love the color, and it’s perfect for the vibe!

Stay tuned for the reveal soon! Let me know if you have any questions.
