Thrift Store Dressers: when to leave and when to buy

Happy Fall!  Fancy Farmgirls, Marg and Liz here!

Thrift stores and Craigslist are full of junk but they can also  be full of some much goodness! The question is,  how do you sort the good from the bad? It’s a big broad topic so lets just narrow it down to dressers.

Exhibit A:  One very brown dresser

What we see:  Solid wood, nice molding detail, and all the hardware is there and not too dated.

And the more drawers the better.  Better for storage, better on the eyes.

Blue chalk paint in Woodlawn blue  and gold metallic spray painted hardware and this piece is instantly updated!

My little guy made some of these yarn wall hangings for our fall sale. I thought I’d give it a try myself.   They are so easy, so cheap and add instant drama.

And Liz’s husband wants to know, “what is it”?

“Why would anyone hang that on their wall”?  “I don’t get it”? šŸ˜‰

This piece would be a beauty to distress as well. The more detail, the better when you want that distressed look.

Exhibit B: Dated hardware and brown.  Always brown!

Body was painted cream and drawers were stained

Exhibit C:  Kids dresser!

This thing was beat up, had lots of stains and the hardware was missing. It was loved on hard!

What we see:  Perfect size.  Not too small, not too big.

See the different transformations it went through before it arrived at it’s current state of this charming navy and gold combo.

And finally one of our first and favorite furniture makeovers. This second hand dresser that had outdated stencils and the hardware had been switched out to the wrong size but it was structurally a great piece.

A fun fresh coat of paint and new hardware and it’s a one of a kind piece that goes perfectly in this little girls room.

We shared that makeover HERE .

Dressers are probably the most multi- functional pieces out there.  They are so good as media stands, buffets, entry tables and even sometimes holding clothes. šŸ˜‰

Change up their use and change up their style simply with paint.  You knew that was comin. šŸ˜‰

  1. I love the simple way you have visualized how amazing a restored piece of furniture can be, namely a dresser! I’ve had a couple of pieces sitting in my garage for a couple of months now that I can’t wait to spend some time updating and re-charming for my daughter’s bedroom!
