Baby Boy Car Seat Canopy Instructions

I’m definitely not a fabulous seamstress, but thanks to my Mom and my Home Economics teacher in middle school, I can whip out a sewing project here and there. My best friend Jo had a baby boy {his name is Holden…I LOVE THAT NAME!}.  Maybe it’s because I grew up in a tiny town called Holden, so I’m a little biased.  I’m quite proud of the baby boy car seat canopy that I made for her. I picked out the fabric myself at a local quilt shop here in St. George called Scrap Apple Quilts. If you are local, it is located just South of the Bloomington Wal-Mart {and NO, I’m not affiliated with them in any way}.

My favorite fabric of the bunch is the orange and white asterisk fabric by Moda.

Isn’t the fabric darling!?!? It’s about $10.00 a yard {here is a link to the fabric online}, so I only bought a half yard, but that was plenty to make a statement on the canopy.

To make the canopy, I followed the main ideas from this tutorial.

The only difference was that I pieced that stripes together with all different colors of black, orange, grey, and turquoise fabrics.

I cut the stripes with my OLFA cutter and went to town with my sewing machine.

It was super easy and only took me an afternoon to make the canopy.

After I sewed the stripes together I ironed down all the seams and then followed the basic instructions at Make it Do for the rest.

I did sew some large black rick rack into the edge because I love that look. It was such a fun gift to give Jo, so I had to share it! I hope you had a great weekend!

  1. Great tutorial! My darling niece is expecting a little boy at the end of October. His name will be Holden! How crazy is that? He is named for a town on the coast of North Carolina called Holden Beach. His parents discovered when they were dating that when they were kids, they had both spent summer vacations at the very same place. Holden is a perfect name for him and we are excited that next summer all of us will be back at Holden Beach again for a week!

  2. They are really great, I think carseat manufacturer should also bring more options with their seats, they all look same. Same boring patterns except a few.

  3. What is this thing? Is the kid underneath all this fabric? Crazy!!!

I live almost on the North Pole and we teach our new moms that their kids need air, even if it´s cold outside. We have focus on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and do NOT recommend to cover up either car seats or strollers. It gets too hot in there and the air will not get changed, so the kid is in danger of just fall to sleep and never wake up!

Google can translate this for you:

    1. The canopy is mainly for transport to/from the house to/from the vehicle. Can help shield from blazing sun, rain, or snow. When you get to where you’re going, throw the front cover up and over the handle
