I’m so proud to finally announce that I have made a decision on a wood floor!!! <—- yep that was three exclamation marks. It was almost exactly a year ago when I wrote about the 7 ways to cope when you hate your carpet post. It’s been a long time coming, and I’m so excited that 2015 is the year that I will finally get rid of the carpet that haunts me in my sleep.
The carpet has been taunting me for over 5 years now. But, when we moved in, our house was brand new. Who wants to replace NEW flooring!?! Not I. Plus I couldn’t afford it. The carpet has been shredding on the edges since day 1 because it is such bad quality. My kids get poked by tack strips all the time. Just last week we had a two-bandaid emergency because of those d.a.m.n. carpet edges.
I’ve had concerns about wood flooring, and I’ve gone in circles for waaaay too long. I had substantial concerns, but after long contemplation, we are going for it!
PLUS, we are so excited to announce that our wood floors are already here and sitting in our home AS WE SPEAK!! They arrived a week or so ago and I might have done a jig in the Home Depot when we went to pick them up.
What did we choose, you ask!?!
It’s called Distressed Barrett Hickory by Home Legend, and it is even better than I imagined. Choosing a wood floor with tiny samples is not my favorite. So, when the floor got here, I broke open a box immediately. The pictures don’t do it justice. The wood grain is my favorite part.
I’m excited to share the process! We will be doing everything ourselves, so we will be living in chaos for a few weeks while we tackle this project. This is the biggest project we have ever tackled and I’m nervous at the magnitude. We will be removing all the baseboards and installing new ones. We will need to cut the base of each door frame for the flooring to fit, and we will be removing the tile in our entryway and kitchen also.

Love the new floors, we are going to do hickory in our basement and it’s quite similar to yours. You will love the wood floors! They will show more dust and dog foot prints, but you can tune it out (I do and I’m quite anal). We have only one rug in our family room and then only in the winter and the house does not feel cold (we live in Canada too and it’s -20C here today). I have a humidifier running all winter and no problem with the floors. The best part is that they don’t hold the dust and other allergens like carpet does. I can’t wait to see your progress 🙂
we are installing the exact same floor. as tough as it is, protect it from tools and such. I have tons of “pantina” thanks to the hubs who thinks he doesn’t need to protect the floor.

Brooke, I have a question for you. Did you install wood on your stairs?
We didn’t install the Home Legend wood on the stairs. We are in the process of putting wood treads on the stairs though. But it’s not the wood flooring. We went with Nustair. Google it. It’s really cool!
How long did it take to do this? I’m debating hiring someone or doing it myself and i have a very similar house to yours! We also have a mix of tile and carpet. UGH! Is it worth the DIY?? lol It could save so much money, but then I ask myself, what is your time and blood worth haha! 🙂

It took us two weeks to remove everything, but that’s because I did most of the work myself while my hubby was at work! If I could afford the tile removal from an outside source I would hire it out to be honest. It was CRAZY! But, I love the result. So I would probably do it again if hiring a third party was too expensive.
