Buying Used Furniture: What you need to know

Hello!  Marg and Liz here of Fancy Farmgirls.

This weekend is our annual spring Barn sale so We’ve been painting A LOT lately .  We wanted to walk you through what we look for when looking for pieces to re-love.

One of the things we look at before buying a second hand piece is hardware.

A lot of times, you may end up with broken or missing pieces.  What may have started out as a thrifty buy can quickly add up if new hardware is required so factor in how many pieces you’ll need to replace.

This picture is the original Craigslist listing.

You can see the middle top drawer pull is missing the matching hardware.  On some pieces this could mean needing to purchase 9 new matching pieces of hardware but Because of the design of this piece and the different styled top drawers we were able to treat the top drawers separately from the others.

I ended up finding a piece with a close enough match from my bin of old hardware and with a coat of our favorite gold spray paint

we were able to unite the old with the new.

And now she’s stunning!

This amazing new wallpaper from mk wallpaper doesn’t hurt either.

This piece we were drawn to because of the legs.  Any dresser with legs suddenly becomes more chic.  Or so we say!

We had fun staging this piece for the sale with these signs from  MayberryCorner  (The cutest little sign shop popping up here in the near future run by our favorite oldest brother!)

And this one, with one of our favorite quotes!

The hardware on this piece was also timeless, avoiding the need to replace with updated hardware.

Another thing that may draw us to a piece is not lack of hardware…but lots of hardware.

This little dresser is a good example.  The dresser itself is fairly basic but with the multiple knobs and differing styles, it adds all the personality the dresser needs.

We gave this piece a quick sanding and replaced the lower hardware with fresh new bin pulls painted in Rustoleums oil rubbed bronze spray paint.

Yard Sale season is just around the corner so keep your eyes open for those pieces just needing a little love

Or look around your own home and see if there is something in need of a makeover.

If you’re local, we’d love to see you at the Barn Sale this weekend where we have a whole “barn” full of some reloved finds!
