Christmas Planter tutorial

Happy Thanksgiving all!

From the Fancy Farmgirls

We hope you find yourselves among loved ones and friends.

I’ve spent the last week getting the house prepped and  ready for the holidays.

Today we’re sharing how to transition your outside decor from Summer and Fall to carry you through the holidays and winter.

Start with your flower pots.  Instead of storing them away after all your summer blooms have died,  change them into Christmas planters.

Here’s our quick how to…

I collected fresh cedar garland from Costco, sticks from my backyard and some filler greenery from the grocery store.

If you’re lucky you’ll be able to gather all your greens from you or your neighbors yard.

We started by clearing out our summer pots that were looking pretty sad from the cold.

Just reuse the same soil and it will help keep the evergreens fresh from the moisture it collects from the rain and snow.

Center random lengths of sticks.

Fill outer ring with cedar greens.  I just took apart several feet of the cedar garland and used that for trailing over the edge of the pot.

The same rules for your summer planters apply to your Christmas planters.

You want Some height, some filler, and some trailers.

Add more sticks for interest (this one is a faux curly willow I had left over from my daughters wedding)

Now that you’ve got your trailers and your height,  next you’ll want to add in your filler.

I grabbed these greens from our local Trader Joes.

The more variety and texture, the better.

I added in some faux berries for a pop of color.

At this point you could dress it up or down with ribbon or ornaments.  I kept mine looking all natural.

So for under $15/ea in supplies you’ll have winter planters to last all throughout the winter.

I had similar planters last year from greenery I collected from my dads ranch and from the rain and snow they looked fresh all winter long.

Now that we’ve got the porch and outside all decked our for the season,

Next week we hope to share our Christmas inside the house.
